Glossary
instances
The system performance elements that SAM monitors; for instance, CPU usage,
free disk space, and so on.
logical disk
In the context of SAM, a logical disk is a fixed, local, nonremovable, lettered disk
drive.
page
A unit of memory that the operating system can move from physical memory to
disk, and vice versa, in order to free up space in physical memory or retrieve data
or code from disk.
page file
A file that the Windows Virtual Memory Manager (VMM) creates on disk as an
extension of its physical memory space.
paging
The process of moving data between physical memory and disk, or vice versa. Also
known as swapping.
thread
A part of a process—that is, specific program commands within a process—that is
currently running in the processor. All threads of a process share the virtual
address space, global variables, and operating system resources of the process.
threshold violation
The change of a monitored instance's value from within to outside of its configured
limits.
virtual memory
Memory that exists on disk as well as in physical memory (RAM). A virtual-memory
system, like Windows, extends its memory capacity by using disk space for
memory when it runs out of physical memory.
Virtual Memory Manager
A Windows component that implements and controls virtual memory and paging.
