If the gardensize will notpermit lengthwiseand thencrosswise
tilling, thenoverlapthe first passesby one-halfa tiller width,fol-
lowedby successivepassesat one-quarterwidth.See Figure18.

Donotoperatethetiller on a slopetoo steepfor safe operation.Till
slowlyand be sureyou havegood footing.Neverpermitthe tillerto
freewheeldownslopes.Failureto followthis warningcould resultin
personalinjury.

Till onlyon moderateslopes,neveron steepgroundwherethe
footing isdifficult.
2.
Tillingup and downslopesis recommended overterracing.Tilling
verticallyon a slopeallows maximumplantingarea and also
leaves roomfor cultivating.
NOTE:Whentillingon slopes,be surethe correctoil levelismain-
tainedin theengine (checkeveryone-halfhourof operation).The
incline of the slopewill causethe oil to slantawayfrom itsnormal
leveland this canstarveengineparts of requiredlubrication.Keepthe
motoroil levelat the full pointat all times.

Up and Down a Slope
1.
To keepsoilerosionto a minimum,be sureto add enoughorganic
matterto the soil sothat it has goodmoisture-holding textureand
try to avoidleavingfootprintsor wheelmarks.
2.
Whentillingvertically,try to makethe first passuphill as thetiller
digs moredeeplygoing uphill thanit doesdownhill.Insoft soil or
weeds,youmay haveto lift the handlebarsslightlywhilegoing up-
hill. Whengoingdownhill,overlapthefirst pass by aboutone-half
the width of the tiller.
