Leveling the Deck
NOTE:Checkthe tractor'stire pressurebeforeperform-
ing anydeck levelngadjustments.Referto Tires on
page26 for information regardingtire pressure.
Front To Rear

Thefront of the cuttingdeck is supportedbya stabilizer
bar that canadjustedto levelthe deck from frontto
rear.The front of the deck shouldbe between1/4dnch
and 3/8-inch lowerthanthe rear of the deck.Adjust if
necessaryas follows:
With the tractorparkedon a firm,levelsurface,place
the deck lift leverin the top notch(highestposition)
and rotatethe blade nearestthe dischargechute so
that it is parallelwith the tractor.
Measure the distancefromthe frontof thebladetip to
thegroundand the rearof thebladetip tothe ground.
Thefirstmeasurement takenshouldbe between1/4"
and3/8" lessthanthe secondmeasurement. Deter-
minethe approximate distancenecessary for proper
adjustment a nd proceed,if necessary, t o thenext step.
3. Fromthe front of thetractor,loosenthe hexlock nut
on eachend of thedeck hangerrod,and turnaway
from the innerhex nuts.See Fig. 5-1.
4. Tightenthe innerhex nutsfront againstthe front
hangerbracketto raisethe front of the deck;loosen
the hexnuts to lowerthe frontof the deck.
NOTE:Modelswith a 42-inchdeck haveonlyONEjam
nut, washer,and lock nut.
5. Retightenthe two lock nutsagainstthe inner hexnuts
whenproperadjustmentis achieved.
Side to Side
If the cuttingdeck appearsto be mowingunevenly,a side
to side adjustment c an be performed.Adjustif necessary
as follows:

With the tractorparkedon a firm,levelsurface,place
the deck lift leverin the top notch(highestposition)
and rotateboth bladesso that they are perpendicular
with the tractor.

Measure thedistancefromtheoutside of theleft blade
tipto theground andthe distance fromtheoutside of the
rightbladetip totheground.Bothmeasurements taken
shouldbe equal.If they'renot,proceed to thenextstep.
Loosen,butdo NOT remove,the hexcap screwon
the left deck hangerbracket.See Fig. 5-2.
Balancethe deck by usinga wrenchto turn the
adjustmentgear (foundimmediatelybehindthe hex
cap screwjust loosened)clockwise/upor counter-
clockwise/down. T hedeck is properlybalancedwhen
bothblade tip measurements takenearlierare equal.
Retightenthe hex capscrewon the left deck hanger
bracketwhenproperadjustmentis achieved.
Parking Brake Adjustment

neutral position, stop engine and remove
key to prevent unintended starting.
If the tractordoes notcome to a completestopwhenthe
brakepedaliscompletelydepressed,or if the tractor's
rear wheelscan roll with the parkingbrakeapplied,the
brakeis in needof adjustment.Seean authorizedMTD
