Servicing
the Air Cleaner
Theair cleanerpreventsdamagingdirt, dust,etc.,from enteringthe
carburetor and beingforced intothe engineand is importantto engine
life and performance. T heair cleanerconsistsof a pleatedfilter. Never
run the enginewithoutan air cleanercompletely assembled.
Cleantheair cleanerevery 25 hoursof operationor once a season.
Replacetheair cleanerannually.
Neverstartor run the enginewith the air cleanerassemblyor theair
filter removed.
NOTE:Do notuse pressurizedair or solventsto cleanthe filter.Pres-
surizedair can damagethefilter and solventswill dissolvethefilter.

Loosenthe fastenerthat holdsthe coverand tilt plastichousing
coveron sideof enginedown. See Figure18.
2.
Removeair filter from plastichousingcover.
3.
Toloosendebris,gentlytap the filter on a hard surface.If the filter
is excessively dirty, replacewith a newfilter.
4.
Insertcover'stabs into slotsin bottomof base.
5.
Tilt cover up into placeand securewithfastener.
Checking

Oil
Checkoil levelbeforeeachoperation.Be sureoil levelis maintained.
1.
Checktheoil with the enginestoppedand level.
2.
Removetheoil fill dipstickand wipe it clean.
3.
Insertand tightendipstick.Removeit to checktheoil level.
4.
If theoil levelis near or belowthe lowerlimit markon the dipstick,
removethe oil fillercap/dipstick,and fill with the recommended oil
to the upperlimit mark. Donotoverfill.
5.
Reinstallthe oil fill dipstick.

With engineoff but still warm,disconnectthe spark plugwire and
keepit awayfrom the spark plug.
2.
Placea suitablecontainernext to theengine to catchthe usedoil.
3.
Removetheoil fill dipstickand drain theoil intothe containerby
tippingtheenginetowardthe oil fillerneck.See Figure19.
Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDo notdiscardwith householdwaste.Checkwith your localauthori-
_tiesor SearsService Centerfor safe disposal/recycling facilities.
4.
With the enginein a levelposition,fill to the upperlimit mark on
the dipstickwith the recommended oil.
Runningtheenginewith a low oil levelcan causeengine damage.
5.
Reinstall t he oil fill dipsticksecurely.
