Disengageall controlson the mower.
Movethe gear shiftleverinto the neutral(N) position.
Insertthe key intothe ignitionswitch.
If startinga cold engine,placethe throttle/chokecontrolall the
wayforward,intothe CHOKE1_.1 position.If restartinga warm
engine,placethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe Fast_
position.
Turnthe ignitionkey clockwiseto the START_
position.After
theengine starts,releasethe key.it will returnto the RUN(_
position.
Move the key t othe RUN/L GNT position
tooperate
the
mowerusingthe headlight.
Do NOThold the key in the STARTpositionfor longerthan five
secondsat a time.Doingso maycause damageto yourengine's
electricstarter.

Movethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe FAST'_
position.
NOTE: Neverleavethe throttle/choke control in the CHOKEI'_!
positionwhileoperatingthemower.Doingso will resultin a "rich"fuel
mixtureand cause theengineto run poorly.

If the bladesare engaged,releasethe BladeControl.

Movethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe STOPlI_ position.
3.
Turnthe ignitionkey counterclockwise to the STOPO
position.

Removethe keyfrom the ignitionswitchto preventunintended
starting.
ENGAGING
THE DRIVE
Avoidsuddenstarts,excessivespeedand suddenstops.
Start the engineas instructedearlierin this sectionand movethe
throttle/chokecontrolintothe FAST'_
position.
Totravel FORWARD:
a.
Placethegear shift leverin anyof the fourforwardground
speeds.Selecta speedappropriatefor the conditionsand a
paceyou'recomfortablewith.
b.
Slowlysqueezethe DriveControlagainstthe left handlegrip
andthe mowerwillmove.Releaseit anddrivemotionwillstop.
Totravel in REVERSE,
a.
Checkthat the area behindis clear.
b.
Placethe gear shift leverin Reverse(R).
c.
Slowlysqueeze the DriveControl a gainsttheleft handlegrip
and themowerwill move.Releaseitand drivemotionwillstop.
DoNOT attemptto changethe directionof travel whenthe moweris
in motion.Alwaysreleasethedrivecontrol and bringthe mowerto a
completestop beforerepositioning thegear shift leverfrom a forward
gear into Reverse.Failuretodo so may resultin seriousdamageto
rourtransmission.
Donot leavethe operator'spositionwithoutfirst releasingthe Blade
Control.If leavingthe mowerunattended,also turnthe engineoff and
removethe ignitionkey.
ENGAGING
THE BLADES
Tohelp avoidblade contactor a thrownobject injury,keepbystand-
lets, helpers,childrenand pets at least75 feet from the machinewhile
lit is in operation.Stopmachineif anyoneentersthe area.
1.
Movethethrottle/chokecontrolto the FAST_
position.
2.
Slowly squeezethe BladeControlagainstthe righthandlegrip
and the bladeswill engage.Releaseit and the bladeswill stop.
OPERATING
ON SLOPES
Referto the SLOPEGUIDEon page7 to help determineslopeswhere
you mayoperatethemowersafely.
Donot mowon inclineswith a slopein excessof 15degrees(a rise
of approximately 2-1/2feet every 10feet).The mowercouldoverturn
and cause seriousinjury.
•
Mowacrosstheface of slopes;neverup and down.
•
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.
•
Watchfor holes,ruts, rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumpswhich can
causeyou to slip or trip. Tallgrass can hideobstacles.
•
Alwaysbe sureof yourfooting.A slipand fall can causeserious
personalinjury.If you feelyou are losingyourbalance,release
the blade controlhandleimmediately and the blade willstop
rotatingwithinthree (3) seconds.
•
Donot mow neardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments, y ou could
lose yourfootingor balance.
•
Donot mow slopesgreaterthan 15degreesas shownon the
slopegauge.
•
Donot mowon wet grass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.
