GLOSSARY

auto power shut-off mode
A power saving mode in which the POWER SAVE
indicator lights up and all other indicators go out.
Note that the DATA and ON LINE indicator light are
not affected. This mode saves the most power, but
takes longer to warm up compared to the preheat
mode.
See also preheat mode.
bit
A binary digit, whose state is either yes or no, on or
off, 1 or 0. The smallest unit of information storage
in computers.
byte
A unit of information storage consisting of eight bits,
enough (in most computer codes for Western
languages) to encode one letter, number or symbol.
default gateway
Information needed for connection in a network. For
more information, see your network administrator.
default printer
A printer (specified in the operating system
software), which applications normally use for
printing.
dots-per-inch
A measure of the resolution of a printed image; the
number of dots printed in a linear inch.
See also resolution.
drum cartridge
Contains a photoconductive drum upon which images
for copying or printing are formed.
font
A typeface; a collection of characters with a
consistent appearance and style, such as Times New
Roman. Traditionally in printing, a font was a
typeface in a specific size, such as Times New
Roman 12-point.
interface cable
A bundle of wires in a sheath which transfers data
between a computer and a printer.
IP address
Information needed for connection in a network. For
more information, see your network administrator.
landscape
The orientation of a printed page held with the long
dimension horizontal: wider than it is tall. Printing
runs across the longer dimension.
See also portrait, orientation.
40
local printer
A printer that is directly connected to your computer,
as opposed to a remote or network printer.
megabyte (MB)
A unit of information storage consisting of slightly
more than a million bytes.
See also bit.
memory
The capacity of a device (computer, printer, etc.) to
store information, or the devices in which information
is stored, usually measured in bytes. While you are
working on a file with a computer, it is stored in
random-access memory (RAM) chips, but is lost when
you reset or turn off your computer. When you save a
file, it is stored on floppy or hard disks or other
storage devices.
network printer
A remote printer that is connected to your computer
through a network, as opposed to a local printer.
offline
A condition in which the printer is not ready to accept
data from or communicate with the computer.
See also online.
online
A condition in which the printer is ready to accept
data from and communicate with the computer.
See also offline.
orientation
The way a page must be held in order to be legible. In
portrait orientation, printing runs across the page's
width or shorter dimension. In landscape orientation,
printing runs across the page's length or longer
dimension.
See also landscape, portrait.
parallel interface cable
A data cable which transfers multiple bits of
information simultaneously along each of its wires
from the computer to the printer. The parallel
interface cable should be shielded and less than 3
meters (10 feet) in length.
Note: Use a high-quality, shielded IEEE-1284
compliant parallel interface cable.
See also interface cable.
parallel interface connector
The receptacle in which you plug the end of a parallel
interface cable in order to connect a computer and
printer or other device.
PCL printer driver
The program that enables a computer to send the
printer a print job in PCL (Printer Control Language).
See also printer driver.
