Mail Mode Glossary

access point
The contact point you call in order to access the Internet.
address bit mask
This is a value that is used to calculate a subnet address.
DNS
Domain Name System, which controls the way that computers can contact
each other, exchange e-mail, and display Web pages. The Internet Protocol
(IP) uses Internet addresses and the DNS to deliver mail and other information
from computer to computer.
IP address
A series of four numbers separated by periods (called dots).
login ID
A name assigned to you by an Internet provider. This name identifies you
when you log onto the Internet.
login password
A password you have to input to log onto the Internet. Your provider's
computer checks your password against your login ID to see if they match
what is registered.
mail address
A mail address, also called an Internet address, is made up of two main
parts separated by @ (pronounced "at"). The part of the address to the left
of the @ sign is the user name (often the login ID). The part to the right of
the @ sign is the host name or domain name, which identifies the computer
where you have an Internet mail account.
POP
Post Office Protocol, which controls mail systems where e-mail is delivered
to a mailbox on a server. To receive the mail, someone must log onto the
server using a password and user name.
