Viewing a Tape Library
NOTE: It can take a long time to inventory the tape media in a tape library, which is why
Data Protector Express usually performs a "light inventory" rather than running an
identify job on all the slots in a loader. See the "Inventory Process" section below for
more information.
Additional media slot information and configuration details are accessed via the Element
Status dialog for that slot, which is accessed by a right click on the desired slot. For
example, you can use this to disable slots (using the 'Reserve' option) and identify a
cleaning cartridge. It also allows you to mark media in a slot as offsite, which is useful if
you are planning to remove the tape cartridge from the tape library.
Element status
Known states are listed below
•
•
•
•
•
There are also two Probably states. The purpose of these states is to allow for a quick
inventory of a loader, which makes some good guesses as to the location and current state
of media, without having to mount each media in the loader to identify it absolutely.
•
•
Empty: No media is present in the element.
Valid: Media is present, media is in the database, and media has been identified
physically by mounting the media. This is also the state that occurs after a format
job.
Invalid: Media is present, media has an error associated with it, such as: NOT IN
DATABASE. This is the default state for media in a loader.
Unknown: This is the default state of any element in a library set when an
inventory is allocated, and when a user sets the state on the element status
property of an element in the database.
Cleaning: The media is a cleaning cartridge and has an associated number of
remaining cleaning cycles.
Probably Valid: Media is present, media during the previous initialization pass
was valid, or media has an associated barcode for which an association was
successfully made during initialization.
Probably Invalid: Media is present; media during the previous initialization pass
was invalid.
