    12 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE POWER WAGON: THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE Your Power Wagon is a specialty vehicle, equipped with several features not available on other production trucks. It is very important that you read the following sections of the owner’s manual before operation.

    Ignition Key Removal Automatic Transmission Place the shift lever in PARK. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position, and remove the key.     Ignition Key Release Button Locking Doors With The Key You can insert the key with either side up. To lock the door, turn the key rearward, to unlock the door, turn the key forward. See Section 7 of this manual for door lock lubrication.

    16 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE turn on for three (3) seconds for a bulb check. If the light remains on after the bulb check, it indicates that there is a problem with the electronics. In addition, if the light begins to flash after the bulb check, it indicates that someone used an invalid key to start the engine.

    CAUTION! Always remove Sentry Keys from the vehicle and lock all doors when leaving the vehicle unattended. At the time of purchase, the original owner is provided with a four-digit PIN number. Keep the PIN in a secure location. This number is required for dealer replacement of keys.

    18 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will stop flashing.

    STEERING WHEEL LOCK — IF EQUIPPED Your vehicle may be equipped with a passive steering wheel lock. This lock prevents steering the vehicle with- out the ignition key. If the steering wheel is moved no more than 1/2 turn in either direction and the key is not in the ignition switch, the steering wheel will lock.

    20 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE Rearming of the System: The security system will rearm itself after the 15 addi- tional minutes of headlights and security telltale flashing, if the system has not been disabled. If the condition which initiated the alarm is still present, the system will ignore that condition and monitor the remaining doors and ignition.

    The Security Alarm System is designed to protect your vehicle; however, you can create conditions where the system will arm unexpectedly. If you remain in the vehicle and lock the doors with the transmitter, the alarm will sound when you pull the door handle to exit. The door will be locked but the Security Alarm will not arm.

    22 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE This system allows you to lock or unlock the doors from distances up to about 23 feet (7 meters) using a hand held radio transmitter. The transmitter need not be pointed at the vehicle to activate the system.

    1. Perform this operation while standing outside the vehicle. 2. Press and hold the LOCK button on a programmed (i.e. functional) key fob. 3. Continue to hold the LOCK button, wait at least 4 seconds, but no longer than 10 seconds, then press and hold the PANIC button.

With transmitter buttons facing down, use a flat blade or dime to pry the two halves of the transmitter apart.

To indicate that the vehicle is about to start, the parking lights will flash and the horn will sound briefly. This will occur only after the vehicle has been shifted into the Park position after the vehicle has been driven (shifted out of Park and all doors closed).

    Child Protection Door Lock To provide a safer environment for children riding in the rear seat, the rear doors of your vehicle have the child- protection door lock system. Child Protection Door Lock Location THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 31 To use the system, open each rear door, slide the lever UP to engage the locks and DOWN to disengage the child- protection locks.

Remember that the rear doors can only be opened from the outside when the child protection locks are engaged. NOTE: After setting the child protection door lock system, always test the door from the inside to make certain it is in the desired position.

    34 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE Window Lockout Switch (4 Door Models Only) The window lockout switch on the driver’s door allows you to disable the window control on the other doors. To disable the window controls on the other doors, press the window lock button.

    Please pay close attention to the information in this section. It tells you how to use your restraint system properly to keep you and your passengers as safe as possible. WARNING! In a collision, you and your passengers can suffer much greater injuries if you are not properly buckled up.
  • Page 36 36 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE WARNING! It is extremely dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and seat belts.
  • Page 37 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 37 Lap/Shoulder Belt Operating Instructions 1. Enter the vehicle and close the door. Sit back and adjust the seat. 2. The seat belt latch plate is above the back of the front seat, next to your arm in the rear seat. Grasp the latch plate and pull out the belt.
  • Page 38 38 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 3. When the belt is long enough to fit, insert the latch plate into the buckle until you hear a “click.” Latch Plate To Buckle WARNING! • A belt buckled into the wrong buckle will not protect you properly.
  • Page 39 4. Position the lap belt across your thighs, below your abdomen. To remove slack in the lap belt portion, pull up on the shoulder belt. To loosen the lap belt if it is too tight, tilt the latch plate and pull on the lap belt. A snug belt reduces the risk of sliding under the belt in a collision.
  • Page 40 40 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 6. To release the belt, push the red button on the buckle. The belt will automatically retract to its stowed position. If necessary, slide the latch plate down the webbing to allow the belt to retract fully. WARNING! A frayed or torn belt could rip apart in a collision and leave you with no protection.
  • Page 41 Detaching Buckle with Key 2. To reattach the seat belt to the front center seat, pull the black buckle latch plate forward from the cab back panel and insert it into the black keyed buckle until there is an audible click. Refer to the previous section for the proper seat belt usage.

    Adjustable Upper Shoulder Belt Anchorage In the front row outboard seats, the shoulder belt can be adjusted upward or downward to help position the belt away from your neck. Press the button located on the upper belt guide, and then move it up or down to the position that serves you best.

    44 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE How To Use The Automatic Locking Mode 1. Buckle the combination lap/shoulder belt. 2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pull downward until the entire belt is extracted. 3. Allow the belt to retract. As the belt retracts, you will hear a clicking sound.

    Seat Belt Pretensioners — If Equipped The seat belts for both front seating positions are equipped with pretensioning devices that are designed to remove slack from the seat belt system in the event of a collision. These devices improve the performance of the seat belt by assuring that the belt is tight about the occupant early in a collision.

    46 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE NOTE: The following steps must occur within the first 60 seconds of the ignition switch being turned to the ON or START position. DaimlerChrysler does not recom- mend deactivating the Enhanced Warning System (BeltAlert).

    Seat Belt Extender If a seat belt is too short, even when fully extended, your dealer can provide you with a seat belt extender. This extender should be used only if the existing belt is not long enough. When it is not required, remove the ex- tender and store it.
  • Page 48 48 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE the instrument panel, above the glove compartment. The words SRS/AIRBAG are embossed on the airbag covers. NOTE: The front airbags are certified to the Federal regulations that allow less forceful deployment. The front airbags have a multistage inflator design. This may allow the airbag to have different rates of inflation that are based on collision severity and occupant size.
  • Page 49 NOTE: Do not use a clothing bar mounted to the coat hooks in this vehicle. A clothing bar will impede the proper performance of the window bags. Along with the seat belts, front airbags work with the instrument panel knee bolsters to provide improved protection for the driver and front passenger.

Children that are not big enough to properly wear the vehicle seat belt (see section on Child Restraints) should be secured in the rear seat in child restraints or belt- positioning booster seats. Older children who do not use child restraints or belt-positioning booster seats should ride properly buckled up in the rear seat.
  • Page 51 WARNING! • Relying on the airbags alone could lead to more severe injuries in a collision. The airbags work with your seat belt to restrain you properly. In some collisions the airbags won’t deploy at all. Always wear your seat belts even though you have airbags.

  • Page 53 WARNING! Ignoring the AIRBAG warning light in your instru- ment panel could mean you won’t have the airbags to protect you in a collision. If the light does not come on, stays on after you start the vehicle, or if it comes on as you drive, have the airbag system checked right away.

  • Page 57 If you do have a collision which deploys the airbags, any or all of the following may occur: • The nylon airbag material may sometimes cause abra- sions and/or skin reddening to the driver and front passenger as the airbags deploy and unfold. The abrasions are similar to friction rope burns or those you might get sliding along a carpet or gymnasium floor.

    258 STARTING AND OPERATING STARTING PROCEDURES – GAS ENGINES Before starting your vehicle, adjust your seat, adjust both inside and outside mirrors, and fasten your seat belts. The starter should not be operated for more than 15- second intervals. Waiting a few seconds between such intervals will protect the starter from overheating.

    Normal Starting Normal starting of either a warm or cold engine is obtained without pumping or depressing the accelerator pedal. Turn the key to the START position and release when the engine starts. If the engine fails to start within 10 seconds, turn the key to the OFF position, wait 5 seconds, then repeat the starting procedure.

The specific grade rating assigned by the tire’s manufacturer in each category is shown on the sidewall of the tires on your car.

    Temperature Grades The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
