Glossary

active. (1) Describes an application, dialog or
window that currently has focus on the desktop.
(2) Describes the vocabulary, displayed in the
Vocabulary field in ViaVoice Options, which is
currently in use for dictation and command and
control.
alternate word. One or more words displayed
in the Correction window that sound like the
word selected from a dictation.
Attention word. A word spoken by the user to
alert ViaVoice that the next words spoken will be
a command. The word 'Computer' is set as the
default Attention word.
command set. A group of related commands.
continuous. Describes a manner of speaking,
during which the user speaks normally, making
natural pauses between words or phrases.
correction. The use of the Correction window to
identify and correct recognition errors in dictated
text.
device driver. Software, normally provided by
the manufacturers of peripheral computer
equipment, that enables that equipment to
operate with the Windows operating system.
dictation macro. A user-defined word
associated with user-specified text. When the
word is correctly recognized during a dictation
session, the associated text is displayed in the
dictation window.
dictation window. Any application window
into which the user's dictated text appears. When
used during a dictation session, SpeakPad and
the Word document window are examples of
dictation windows.
field. An area in a window where data can be
typed or otherwise specified.

focus. The state of an application or a window
when it can receive input, either by speaking or
with the keyboard and mouse.
macro. A user-defined spoken command. See
dictation macro.
navigation. Interactions with the user interface
by means of voice commands.
natural commands. In ViaVoice, describes
commands that resemble a person's normal
speaking style.
out-of-vocabulary. Describes a word said by the
user but which is unknown to ViaVoice.
personal vocabulary. The spellings and
pronunciations of words added by a particular
user.
speech session. The text of a dictation and the
associated audio of the user's speech.
Topic. A small vocabulary designed for a
particular profession or subject matter.
train. (1) To record the pronunciation of one or
more words. (2) To process a recording of a story
to obtain a voice model.
untrained. Describes a word or phrase for
which no pronunciation is available.
USB. (1) Universal Serial Bus. (2) Describes any
device or hardware that complies with the USB
specification.
view. Any of several displays of command sets
in the What Can I Say window.
vocabulary. A list of words provided with the
product or obtained separately which can be
recognized correctly when spoken by a user.
voice model. Data based on the recording of the
user's voice with a given microphone within a
