Shared Folders Create Shared Folders on your LaCie professional server so that us- ers and groups on the network may access data. It is easy to config- ure SMB (Windows) and NFS (Linux) shares using Windows Storage Server 2008 Server Manager while the ExtremeZ-IP Administrator can set AFP (Mac) shares. You may remotely set protocols, permissions, and quotas for each Shared Folder. However, permissions that are based on active di- rectory accounts must be set from the same network and domain as your server. If you do not want to make changes to NTFS permissions, skip the next step. IMPORTANT INFO: LaCie highly recommends that customers choose to manage their Shared Folders using either Share Protocols or NTFS. Since they are essentially independent, changes to one setting does not affect the other, which may cause confusion when managing shared resources. For example, the most restrictive of the two will be applied to all files in the volume. 7. Check the box or boxes that correspond to the desired protocol(s) (SMB and/or NFS). For each protocol, choose a Share name. When selecting both pro- tocols, create different share names to avoid resolution issues. Fig. 02 10. Click Next> to move to SMB Settings. 11. The quotas may be: ✦ Hard - Users and groups will not be able to write data once the Shared Folder limit has been reached. The user will be notified that the limit has been reached. ✦ Soft - Users and groups can still write data if the quota is reached. For example, you can choose an “Extended Limit” or...

For example, media files such as .avi or .mp3 can be blocked from a Shared Folder that is meant for text documents only. TECHNICAL NOTE: Similar to Quota Policy, there are predefined quota templates in File Screen Policy. As well, custom file policy tem- plates may be created in File Server Resource Manager that can fur- ther limit the file types on a Shared Folder. To set your custom file pol- icy template, go to Server Manager>Roles>File Services>Share and Storage Management. Right-click File Server Resource Man- ager and select Configure Options... Creating AFP Shares With ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, you can create a new AFP Share or migrate an existing SMB Shared Folder. 2.2.1. Migrate an Existing SMB Shared Folder This is the most convenient method of sharing data via AFP when a Shared Folder must include the SMB protocol. Spotlight Support on AFP Shares Spotlight may be turned on or off on each AFP Shared Folder or enabled as a default for all AFP shares. Spotlight must be enabled using ExtremeZ-IP Administrator. 1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator. 2. Launch ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, Start>ExtremeZ-IP Ad- ministrator.
