Cleaning Formula

Cleaning formula
Keep plenty of genuine BISSELL formula on hand so you can clean whenever it fits your schedule. Always use genuine BISSELL deep cleaning formulas. Non-BISSELL cleaning formulas may harm the machine and may void the guarantee.

To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock due to internal component damage, use only BISSELL cleaning fluids intended for use with the carpet washer.

Assembly


Do not plug in your machine until you are familiar with all instructions and operating procedures.

Your machine assembles quickly and easily. The only tool you will need for assembly is a Phillips head screwdriver.

  1. Slide upper body onto lower body. Make sure there is not a gap between upper and lower body.
  2. Firmly holding upper body, screw two screws into holes marked with arrows. If tightening screws is difficult, remove, re-insert and tighten again.
  3. If assembled properly, there should be no gap between upper and lower body. If a gap appears, continue to tighten screws until no gap is present.
  4. Slide upper handle into upper body by aligning pin and sliding into place.
    NOTE: Be sure to secure upper handle before lifting. Rotate handle lock clockwise to secure.
  5. Place solution tank on back of unit.
  6. Wrap power cord around cord wraps. Assembly is now complete.

Operations

Before you clean

  1. Move furniture to another area if cleaning an entire room. (Optional)
  2. Remove loose dirt and impediments.
  3. Plan your cleaning route to leave an exit path. It is best to begin cleaning in the corner farthest from your exit.
  4. Pre-Treating (optional) Pre-treat stubborn stains and highly soiled carpet in hallways and other high-traffic areas.
    1. Generously spray BISSELL Pretreat evenly over soiled area.

      DO NOT OVER WET CARPET
    2. Wait 3-5 minutes before washing.

Tip

  • Washing carpeting regularly can reduce dust and allergens in your home.

Fill the tank

  1. Remove the solution tank by lifting it straight up, then away from the lower body.
  2. Unscrew the black cap at the bottom of the solution tank.
  3. Fill with hot (not boiling) tap water (140°F/60°C MAX) to the WATER line. Fill the rest of the tank with BISSELL 2X Formula to the FORMULA line. Replace and tighten the black cap.

    Do not microwave or boil water before filling.
  4. Place solution tank on lower body.

Carpet washing

  1. Plug into proper outlet.
  2. Adjust the retractable handle by turning counterclockwise and lifting the handle up. Turn clockwise to secure.
  3. With foot, push the red power pedal, located on the back of the machine.
    NOTE: Handle must be in the full upright position before use.
  4. With foot, push the grey detent pedal. located next to power button.
  5. Cleaning Passes. While pressing the trigger, make one slow forward wet pass and another one back.

    Do not overwet.
  6. Release the trigger and make one slow forward and backward pass over the same area.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until solution being pulled up appears clean.
  8. Empty the collection tank when dirty water reaches the full line, or when the solution tank is empty.

Empty the collection tank

  1. With foot, push the red power pedal, to turn off and unplug power cord from outlet.
  2. Remove the collection tank from base of unit.
    1. Release collection tank latches (on each side) by pulling up from the bottom of latch and then out.
    2. Carefully remove tank by lifting up on the tank handle.
  3. Carry collection tank to a toilet or sink. To empty, pour out contents using opening at back of tank.
  4. Rinse collection tank thoroughly and replace on unit.
  5. Refill solution tank and continue cleaning.

Clean up after use

  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Remove and rinse collection tank thoroughly.
  3. Remove tank vent & foam filter (located on top of the collection tank) and rinse.
  4. Clean nozzle window by lifting latch and removing nozzle from machine. Rinse under running water.
  5. 40N7 and 40H5 series models, pop out CrossAction brush by pushing the tabs away from each other and pushing down. Once the brush pops out, rinse and replace by snapping the tabs back into place.
  6. When finished replace nozzle and secure with latch.
    NOTE: For best results, it is recommended that the nozzle is cleaned after each use.
  7. Remove lint and hair from red gasket in base of unit. (Do not remove gasket)
  8. Replace the collection tank on the base of the machine and secure with latches.

Maintenance & Care

Machine storage
For best results, a few simple steps can assure your machine is well maintained after your cleaning is complete.

  1. Wrap power cord around Quick Release Cord Wrap™ on side of the machine.
  2. Wipe all surfaces with a soft cloth. Store machine upright in a protected, dry area.
    NOTE: You may have cleaning formula remaining in the solution tank. You may store your machine this way for the next cleaning task, but never keep dirty water in the collection tank.


To reduce the risk of electric shock, turn power switch off and disconnect plug from electrical outlet before performing maintenance or troubleshooting checks.

Do not store unit where freezing may occur.
Damage to internal components may result.

Install the replacement brush belt

  1. Turn the machine off and unplug from wall outlet.
  2. Remove solution and collection tanks.
  3. Lay machine down to access the bottom of the machine.
  4. With a Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the belt cover and remove.
  5. Remove the brush end cap and remove belt from brush.
  6. Brush can now be removed.
  7. Belt can be removed by sliding off the motor pulley.
  8. Clean or replace belt. Attach belt to motor pulley and brush, insert brush into right side end cap.
  9. Reattach the left end cap and slide brush back into place.
  10. Replace the belt cover and screw into place.
  11. Manually rotate brush to make sure it rotates freely and that the belt is aligned properly.

Troubleshooting


To reduce the risk of electric shock, turn power switch off and disconnect plug from electrical outlet before performing maintenance or troubleshooting checks.

Reduced spray OR no spray

Solution tank empty Refill tank with water and formula
Lint screen on solution tank cap clogged Soak solution tank cap in warm water and then rinse under running water

Upper handle is not in the upright and locked position Rotate the retractable handle lock, pull handle up and return the handle lock to the locked position.

Machine not picking up cleaning solution

  • Do not pull or carry by cable, use cable as a handle, close door on cable, or pull cable around sharp edges or corners.
  • Keep cable away from heated surfaces.
  • To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cable.
  • Do not handle plug or appliance with wet hands.
  • Turn off all controls before unplugging.
  • Plastic film can be dangerous. To avoid danger of suffocation, keep away from children.
  • Use only as described in this user guide.
  • Use only manufacturer's recommended attachments.
  • Do not immerse in water or liquid.
  • If appliance is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water; do not attempt to operate it and have it repaired at an authorized service center.
  • Do not put any object into openings.
  • Do not use with any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce air flow.
  • Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
  • Do not use to pick up flammable or combustible liquids, such as petroleum, or use in areas where they may be present.
  • Do not pick up toxic material (chlorine bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner, etc.)
  • Do not use appliance in an enclosed space filled with vapours given off by oil base paint, paint thinner, some mothproofing substances, flammable dust, or other explosive or toxic vapours.
  • Do not pick up hard or sharp objects such as glass, nails, screws, coins, etc.
  • Keep appliance on a level surface.
  • Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.
  • If your appliance has a motorized brushroll, do not leave machine running in the same spot without the handle fully upright.
  • If your appliance is fitted with a nonrewireable BS 1363 plug it must not be used unless a 13 amp (ASTA approved to BS 1362) fuse is fitted in the carrier contained in the plug. Spares may be obtained from your BISSELL supplier. If for any reason the plug is cut off, it must be disposed of, as it is an electric shock hazard should it be inserted into a 13 amp socket.
  • Use indoors only.
  • Always connect to a properly earthed electrical socket. Do not modify earthed plug.
  • Liquid must not be directed towards equipment containing electrical components.
  • Do not immerse. Use only on surfaces moistened by the cleaning process. Use only BISSELL cleaning products intended for use with this machine.
  • Use only the type and amount of liquids specified under the operations section of this guide.
  • Always install float before any wet pick-up operation.
