GigRig ABY-BABY Manual

Introduction

The ABY BABY is a versatile and compact ABY splitter, designed to deliver exceptional performance in any setup. Featuring both a buffered or true-bypass A output and a buffered, isolated, and phase-reversible B output, it offers ultimate flexibility. You can easily select each output individually or switch seamlessly between them.

Built to last, the ABY BABY is equipped with our exclusive OptoKick footswitches, engineered for extreme durability to withstand even the most demanding use. It's been designed to accommodate everything from standard passive instrument signals to higher-output line levels, making it perfect for a wide range of applications.

Parts Description

PARTS DESCRIPTION

ABY BABY FOOTSWITCH A: Activates output A

FOOTSWITCH B: Activates output B

INPUT: Plug in here

POWER: Uses a standard 9VDC 2.1mm centre negative power supply

OUT A PASSIVE: This is the non-buffered output

OUT A BUFFERED: This is the buffered output

OUT B ISOLATED: Isolated output

FLIP/FLOP: Push (button in)nto flip/flop between outputs A and B, disengage (button out) for independent control

OUT B PHASE: Flips the phase on output B

EARTH LIFT: Enables you to lift the earth on output B

In Operation

Connecting the ABY BABY

  1. Power Connection:
Use a standard 9V DC power supply with a centre-negative 2.1mm plug, capable of providing at least 150mA.
  2. Signal and Amp Connections:
    • Connect your instrument signal to the INPUT.
    • Connect your first amplifier to either the Buffered or True Bypass A output.

The A output serves as your main earth/ground connection, so ensure this is connected first.
    • Connect your second amplifier to the B output.
  3. OptoKick Footswitches:
Use the OptoKick footswitches to select which amplifier you want to engage.
  4. FLIP/FLOP Button:
The FLIP/FLOP button gives you two operation modes:
    • Standard Operation (blue LEDs): Footswitches work independently. Press footswitch A to turn on output A, and footswitch B to add output B.
    • FLIP/FLOP Operation (red LEDs): Turning on output B will automatically disengage output A, and vice versa.
  5. Phase Switch:
Output B features a Phase switch, which reverses the phase on output B in relation to output A.
    • With both amps on, toggle the phase switch to determine which setting gives you more low end and volume. The setting with more low-end indicates that both amplifiers are in phase.
  6. Earth Lift Switch:
Output B also includes an Earth Lift switch:
    • When button pushed in, your signal earth is connected through output B.
    • When button depressed (button out), the earth/ground is lifted, providing isolation between output A and output B.
This can help eliminate ground loop noise when connecting two amplifiers together.

warning Note:
Output B is a direct mirror of output A, and the phase switch functions independently of the Earth Lift button configuration.

Set Up Examples

STANDARD AMP SWITCHING:
The ABY BABY is most commonly placed at the end of your signal chain, allowing you to easily choose which amplifier to use. This setup lets you switch between two amps with different tones, or simply engage the second amp for solos, adding extra power and presence to your sound.
Set Up Examples - Step 1

TPS Wet/Dry Setup:
The ABY BABY can be used to split your signal for a Wet/Dry configuration, such as a TPS (Two Amp Split) setup. In this arrangement, the signal is split after the gain stages:

  • The B ISOLATED output is routed to your dry amp for a clean, unaffected sound.
  • The A BUFFERED/PASSIVE output is sent to your wet effects (such as delay, reverb, etc.), and then to your wet effects amp.

This setup allows you to achieve rich, faux stereo sounds, all while maintaining a dual mono signal path. It's an excellent way to enhance your tonal palette with minimal complexity.
Set Up Examples - Step 2

There are countless ways to configure the ABY BABY, and its flexibility makes it perfect for any situation. With the ability to reverse the phase, lift the earth, and easily switch between outputs, it serves as a versatile signal splitter that adapts to your needs, no matter the setup.
