In great shape.
All BMW Motorrad motorcycles are designed around the rider.
And every rider knows that the wider the seat, especially towards
the front, the harder it is to reach the oor with your feet – whatever
the seat height. The seat of the R 1200 S has been optimized for
step length; it is markedly slimmer towards the front, giving more
free-dom of movement for sports-style riding and making it easier
to touch the ground when stationary. However, the rear of the seat
is broader, for increased comfort.
20 - 21
The height of the standard seat is 830 millimetres, which
means the step length – the distance from heel to heel – is
1,810 milli metres.
The ergonomic triangle formed by the footrests, seat and
handlebars is designed to give comfortable and relaxing
sports-style riding even over long distances. The screw- tted
pillion passenger footrests can be detached for racing use.
And of course the BMW R 1200 S looks every inch the thorough-
bred sportsbike that it is, with its slim, purposeful lines, and the
striking under-seat pipes at the rear. The rear cladding is noticeably
thinner and more aggressively styled than on previous models, and
the 18-diode LED rear light it houses is not just better-looking, but
also longer-lasting and more energy ef cient than conventional
designs, typically using only 10 to 20 per cent as much electricity.
The front end is unmistakably BMW, with its kidney grille, and
asymmetric headlight unit.
Everything you need to know. Now. With the stripped-down
minimalism you'd expect of a sportsbike, the instrument cluster
is a masterpiece of clarity. The tachometer and rev counter show
you at a glance exactly how much of the new R 1200 S's po tential
you are currently exploiting, while the electronic display provides a
wealth of more detailed information, including mile age, oil tem-
perature, fuel level, range and a clock function. The gear display
shows which gear is currently selected. For optimum visibility, the
instrument lighting automatically adjusts to the level of ambient
light.
