7: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 performance test results
Microsoft SQL Server — average transactions each second
User connection count
The connection count provides information about the number of concurrent connections the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server establishes with the Microsoft SQL Server. The different BlackBerry components make their own
connections to the database. In BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1.x, the number of connections for each
BlackBerry component has been increased to avoid connection bottlenecks when you use Microsoft SQL Server
2000. If you use an MSDE 2000 database, significantly fewer connections are established because the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server tries to avoid activating the MSDE 2000 workload governor. RIM used a remote Microsoft SQL
Server 2000 for the performance benchmarking of BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1.
The connection count was bimodal and remained stable throughout the performance testing. When two
BlackBerry Messaging Agents were generated (less than 1000 user accounts), 116 connections were established.
When four BlackBerry Messaging Agents were generated (more than 1000 user accounts), 160 connections were
established. The BlackBerry Synchronization Service can also establish more connections if all available
connections are busy.
