RECESSED SPRINKLERS
MODEL FR-1 R, FAST RESPONSE SOLDER TYPE. 3/8 & l/2" ORIFICES
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Model FR-1R Recessed Sprink-
lers (Ref. Figure A) are pendent auto-
matic sprinklers of the fast response,
fusible solder type. They are "standard
sprinklers" and produce a hemispheri-
cal water distribution pattern below the
deflector. The sprinklers are available
in both 318 and l/2 inch orifice sizes
and each includes a Recessed Clo-
sure as well as a separate Mounting
Plate which is provided assembled to
the sprinkler.
These sprinklers utilize the same type
of fusible link that is used with the
Models F954 Pendent and F958 Hori-
zontal Sidewall Fast Response Resi-
dential Sprinklers.
The separable two-piece design of the
Recessed Closure and Mounting Plate
allows installation of the sprinklers and
pressure testing of the fire protection
system/evaluation of leak tightness,
prior to installation of a suspended
ceiling or application of the finish coat-
ing to a fixed ceiling. They also permit
removal of suspended ceiling panels
for access to building service equip-
ment, without having to first shut down
the fire protection system and remove
sprinklers.
The l/2 inch adjustment provided with
the FR-1 R Recessed Closure reduces
the accuracy to which the length of the
fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must
be cut.
APPROVALS AND STANDARDS
The 3/8 and l/2 inch orifice Model
FR-1 R Recessed Sprinklers are listed
by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and
Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada
as Quick Response Sprinklers. The
3/8 inch orifice Model FR-1R Re-
cessed Sprinklers are listed for use in
Light Hazard Occupancies.
The laboratory listings only apply to
the temperature ratings and finishes
stated in the Technical Data section.
The 318 and l/2 inch orifice Model
FR-1R Recessed Sprinklers are ac-
cepted by the City of New York under
MEA 39-92-M.

having jurisdiction. Failure to do so
may impair the integrity
of these de-
vices.
The owner is responsible
for
main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. The installing contractor or
manufacturer should be contacted rel-
ative to any questions.
TECHNICAL DATA
The FR-1R Recessed Sprinklers are
rated for use at a maximum service
pressure of 175 psi and they are avail-
able in 14OF/6OC, 165F/74C, and
212F/l OOC temperature ratings. Their
nominal installation dimensions are
given in Figure A.
The combinations of available finishes
for the sprinkler and the two pieces of
the escutcheon plate are indicated in
Table A. A painted or antique bronze
finish for the sprinkler is not available.
The nominal discharge "Q" in U.S. gal-
lons per minute (GPM) for an FR-1R
sprinkler is determined by the formula:

pounds per square inch (psi). The
nominal value of "K" is as follows: 2.8
for the 3/8 inch orifice and 5.6 for the
l/2 inch orifice. Listing standards per-
mit the actual value of "K" to vary as
follows: 3/8 inch orifice from 2.6 to 2.9;
and l/2 inch orifice from 5.3 to 5.8.
The 318 and l/2 inch orifice Model
FR-1 Pendent Sprinklers used in the
FR-1 R Assemblies are described in
Technical Data Sheets TD514 and
TD516, respectively.
