Toyota START+ - Remote Engine Starter Manual

INTRODUCTION

This Remote Engine Starter system is designed to start the engine while you are away from the vehicle.

The system includes a separate accessory remote control exclusively designed for remote engine start/stop operation with long range and engine status feedback capabilities. The long range feature supports remote engine control from the comfort of climate controlled building interiors, while you activate the system through minimum level of physical obstruction such as glass windows and doors. The feedback feature lets you know engine status to confirm system operation.
INTRODUCTION

Alternatively, the original vehicle key fobs can be used for remote engine control. Simply activate the system with a sequence of door lock/unlock signals.
In this case, the operational range is limited to the range of the vehicle's keyless entry system and there is no engine status feedback.

Besides remote engine control, this system can activate the vehicle heating, ventilation and air conditioner system to your preset temperature control, providing you with a comfortable cabin upon your entry. As an added convenience, the remote engine starter can also activate the defogger system.

To ensure your safety and the safety of anyone near the vehicle, the Remote Engine Starter is designed to shut the engine off when it detects any attempt to enter or move the vehicle after a remote engine start.

This Toyota Genuine - Remote Engine Starter system was designed for seamless integration with your vehicle, including perfect synchronization with vehicle immobilizer system. More importantly, the system was validated to meet Toyota safety and reliability standards.

For any questions about the system, please consult your Toyota dealer.

OPERATIONAL RANGE

The table below indicates approximate unobstructed range on which the Remote Engine Starter can be effectively operated.

Type of Operation Unobstructed Range
Via accessory remote control (TYPE A) 800 meters (2,600 feet)
Via original vehicle key fob (TYPE B) 24 meters (80 feet)

Most practical situations in everyday use will have some sort of physical and electrical obstructions between you and your vehicle such as walls, trees, other vehicles, etc. These obstructions might affect the effectiveness of the wireless communication and consequently the remote start/stop performance might be affected.

Therefore, please be advised to consider such possible limitation when choosing location to park vehicle or activating the system from building interior. While inside the building, please look for minimum physical obstruction of building components such as glass windows and doors. Also, try to keep distance from other radio wave emitting devices, or facilities such as radio stations.
OPERATIONAL RANGE - Step 1

Please note that maximum operating range and success rate may vary depending on terrain characteristics, surrounding environment, battery power condition on remote control, radio-frequency interference, etc.

Lastly, the remote control orientation may also affect the wireless wave transmission and reception. Optimal performance is achieved by holding the Accessory remote control vertically.
OPERATIONAL RANGE - Step 2

ACCESSORY REMOTE CONTROL - BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Use two coin-type lithium batteries, Model CR2032.

STEP 1. Using a small Phillips jeweler's screwdriver remove the screw and then the battery cover.

warning NOTE: Do not lose the removed screw.

STEP 2. Remove the battery cover, and then remove the two batteries.

warning NOTE: When removing the battery cover, do not damage the hook on the rear surface.

STEP 3. With the (+) mark facing up, insert the two new batteries. Attach the battery cover, and then tighten the screw.

warning NOTE: Always replace with two new batteries.
Furthermore, to prevent poor contact, wipe the batteries well with a dry cloth before replacement.

STEP 4. Press the button, and make sure that the green LED flashes.

  • Keep battery out of reach of children and in original package until ready to use. Dispose of used battery promptly. If it is swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
  • Do not leave the battery near fire or under direct sunlight. A fire, explosion or excessive heat generation may result.
  • The lithium battery may explode if incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type.
  • Do not pinch the battery with, for example, metal tweezers. The battery may short and generate heat.

DEEP SLEEP MODE (TYPE A)

This function, when activated, will temporarily disable the remote engine start function.
If the vehicle has not been operated in 14 days or more, the vehicle will not respond to Remote Engine Starter. If this happens, unlock and lock the door, or start the engine with the original vehicle key fob to reset the system.

TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION

ACCESSORY REMOTE CONTROL (TYPE A)

The following operation conditions may be considered malfunctions. Check the items on the table first. If problems are not resolved after taking appropriate measures, consult with your Toyota dealer.

Condition 1: The engine will not start by using the Accessory Remote Control (TYPE A) even after numerous attempts.

Possible cause Remedy
The remote engine start operation was attempted while the accessory remote control was held horizontally.
Perform remote engine start command while holding the accessory remote control vertically.
Holding the Accessory Remote Control horizontally weakens the antenna signal transmission.
Accessory remote control was used while the LED was still on or flashing.

Wait for a moment and try again.

warning NOTE: It may not be possible to use the Remote Engine Starter while the LED is on or while previous wireless signal transmission or reception has not been completed.

Location where the remote control was used. Move to a different location, wait for a while, and then try again.
The starter may be affected by radio interference or reflection depending on the location or time.
Accessory remote control was used in a higher location (upper floor of a building) or a place with many obstacles. Avoid a location with many obstacles as much as possible and move so the starter can be used in a good line of sight.
Reflection and other effects may make it difficult for the radio waves to reach the vehicle.

Condition 2: The engine cannot be started using the accessory remote control (TYPE A).

Possible cause Remedy
The button of the Accessory Remote was pressed under the following conditions.
  • The battery LED is red.
  • The LED is off.
The battery power is low. Please the replace the battery immediately.
When the accessory remote control is used in cold weather, the battery LED may light up.
The engine does not start. Check the conditions of the vehicle. Confirm the requirements for remote engine start are met.
The engine has not been started for 14 days or more. Start the vehicle engine according to the DEEP SLEEP MODE reset procedure.
When the engine was started, engine cranking was weak and the starter had to run for an extended amount of time. Check to see if the vehicle battery power is normal. Replace the vehicle battery with a new battery if necessary.
The engine may not start when vehicle battery power is low.
None of the above is applicable. Please consult with your Toyota dealer.
