The 14.3 K-factor Model ESFR-1 Early
Suppression Fast Response Pendent
Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A) are intended
to be used, for example, in the protec-
tion of open-frame single-row, double-
row, multiple-row, and portable rack
storage as well as palletized and solid-
piled storage of most common materi-
als including uncartoned unexpanded
and cartoned expanded plastics. Also,
some storage arrangements of rolled
paper and aerosol may be protected
by the ESFR-1 Sprinklers.
The ESFR-1 Sprinklers, which pro-
duce a hemispherical discharge pat-
tern below the deflector, are primarily
designed for the severe fire challenge
presented by high-piled storage of
plastic commodities. They may, how-
ever, also be economical for use in the
protection of ordinary storages.
Installation standards of both the Na-
tional Fire Protection Association and
Factory Mutual Research Corporation

permit the use of ESFR-1 Sprinklers
for the protection of certain specified
materials stored up to 35 feet high in
buildings with ceilings up to 40 feet
high. Since there are specific guide-
lines on the use of Early Suppression
Fast Response Sprinklers and since
new applications are being evaluated,
the authority having jurisdiction should
be consulted to verify the latest appli-
cable installation standards.
The ESFR-1 Sprinklers have a unique
patented frame design which substan-
tially reduces the frame shadow ef-
fects that normally tend to produce
non-uniformity in the spray pattern.
This feature, in combination with a pat-
ented link mechanism design provides
the ESFR-1 with the very latest in
sprinkler technology.
The Model ESFR-1 Early Suppression
Fast Response Sprinklers are listed by
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and
Underwriters Laboratories of Canada
for use with storage heights up to 35
feet high in buildings with ceilings up
to 40 feet high, when installed in accor-
dance with the applicable Standards of
the National Fire Protection Associa-
tion.
The Model ESFR-1 Early Suppression
Fast Response Sprinklers are ap-
proved by the Factory Mutual Re-
search Corporation for use with stor-
age heights up to 35 feet high in
buildings with ceilings up to 40 feet
high, when installed in accordance
with Factory Mutual's installation stan-
dards for the use of Early Suppression
Fast Response Sprinklers.
The Model ESFR-1 Early Suppression
Fast Response Sprinklers are also ap-
proved by the Verband der Sach-
versicherer. The use of the ESFR-1
Sprinkler is required to be agreed upon
by the VdS for each application.
