Eng ine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amoun t of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving par ts .
In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in-
ternal comb ustion eng ines consume a certa in
amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from
engine to eng ine and may change significantly
over the life of the eng ine . Typically, eng ines
with a specified break-in per iod (see
c::>
poge 153)
consume more oil during t he
break-in per iod t han t hey consume after oil
consumption has sta bilized.
Under normal conditions, t he rate of oil con-
sum ption depends on the quality and viscosity
of t he oil, t he RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which t he engine is ope rated, the ambient
temperature and road conditio ns. Furthe r fac-
tors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida-
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump -
tion may increase over t ime until replacement
of worn componen t s may become necessary.
With all these variables coming into play, no
standa rd rate of oil consumption can be es -
tablished or specified . There is no alternative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev-
el, see Note .

Tips
- The oil pressure warning display.
is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref-
erably each time you refuel, and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have t he impression your engine
consumes excessive amounts of oil, we
recommend that you consu lt your Audi
deale r t o have the cause of your concer n
prope rly diagnosed . Keep in mind that
th e accurat e meas ureme nt of oil con-
sumpt ion requires great care and may
t ake some ti me. Y our Audi dealer has in-
st ruct ions about how t o measure oil con-
sumption accurately.
