Getting to know your instrument

Humans spend a large proportion of their time indoors. The air indoors is often polluted with dust particles, pollen, animal hair and odours and is too dry, particularly in winter. Ambient air that is too dry may have a number of negative effects.
The LW 230 air washer humidifies air that is too dry and simultaneously cleans it from dust, pollen, animal hair and odours. Just like rain does in nature, the air is "washed clean". The LW 230 air washer

  • Washes and humidifies air particularly hygienically without filter mats
  • Operates quietly with three output levels
  • Suitable for rooms up to 40 m² in size
  • Consumes little energy and automatically switches off if the water runs out
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher-safe

Principle of air washing

  1. The quiet and low-energy fan sucks the dirty air in from the top.
  2. The air passes over the humidification discs, which continuously rotate in water, and picks up humidity.
  3. The water acts as a natural filter that cleans the supplied air from dust.
  4. The cleaned and humidified air escapes through lateral outlets.

A relative humidity of between 40 and 60% is generally recommended. This value is often not reached in winter when cold air enters living spaces that are being aired and is then warmed up. Air can absorb more humidity in line with increasing air temperature. The air tries to compensate by taking humidity from other sources such as mucous membranes, skin, furniture and accessories, etc. This may have a number of negative effects:

  • mucous membranes dry out, lips become chapped and dry, eyes become irritated;
  • infections and respiratory diseases are more likely to occur;
  • exhaustion, tiredness and difficulty concentrating;
  • pets and plants are put under unnecessary strain;
  • promotion of dust and electrostatic charging of textiles made of synthetic fibres, carpets and plastic floor coverings;
  • damage to furniture made of wood, particularly parquet floors;
  • detuning of musical instruments.

The air washer now enables the air to gather the required humidity on the large surfaces of the humidification discs. Air humidification is carried out by the principle of auto-regulating cold evaporation. No additional control units are required.
To prevent a build-up of bacteria, we recommend using the supplied silver ion pads (item no. 164.160). Additional regular cleaning is essential.

Initial use

Remove the transport lock

  • Open the cardboard packaging.
  • Keep the plastic covering closed and lift the device out using the handle recesses on the upper cover.
  • Now remove all plastic films.
  • Check the device, mains plug and cable for damage.
  • Lift off the upper cover with the fan unit, lift out the humidification discs at the holder and remove the transport lock from the tub and the fan unit. Check whether all transport locks have been removed.
  • Open the silver ion pads' outer packaging and place both pads inside the tank. Use the equipment provided for this.
  • Reinsert the humidification discs. The holder automatically falls to the side and the humidification discs are secured. Make sure that the red spot is on the top of the holder.

Fill with water

  • When filling with water, disconnect the plug from the mains.
  • To fill the tub, lift out the upper cover with fan unit by the side handle recesses and place to one side.
  • During filling, leave the humidification discs in the tub. Fill the tub with fresh, cold tap water at most up to the lower edge of the "MAX" marking (7.2 l) on the inside of the tub. The most straightforward way to do so is to use a large container free of limescale and impurities (water can, jug). Use only fresh, cold tap water. For optimum humidification output, we recommend filling the tub with water up to the "OPT" mark (3.6 l).
  • Place the upper cover with integrated fan unit on the tub. If the upper cover cannot be placed precisely onto the tub, turn the upper cover around by 180 degrees. This is a design feature and ensures that the fill level sensor contacts touch each other. Never use force to place the upper cover on the tub. Otherwise the device will be damaged.

information Note:

  • Optionally, you can add a small amount of soluble aromatic oils to the water. This releases a fragrance into the air.

  • Ensure the water level in the tub with inserted humidification discs never exceeds the lower edge of the "MAX" marking on the inside of the tub.

Tip: The addition of a small volume of conventional washing-up liquid (e.g. 1 drop) breaks the water surface tension and increases evaporation output.

Positioning the device

  • Place the humidifier on a firm, even, water-resistant surface.
  • Position the air washer in the vicinity of a heater to improve evaporation, in particular in large rooms (do not exceed a max. temperature of 40°C). Always ensure that the air inlet and air outlet remain clear and that the air flows freely.
  • Insert the mains plug into the socket. Ensure that the cable does not pose a trip hazard. You can clamp the mains cable in the vertical ridge on the rear of the tub and lead it downwards.

Usage

Switch on air washer

Switch on the device using the On/off button in the centre of the upper cover. The display lights up, shows fan level 0 and the water fill level.
Select the fan speed using the fan button in the centre of the upper side.

Graphic displayed Fan level
Level 0, standby – fan off
Level 1, low
Level 2, medium
Level 3, maximum

The water level gauge indicates the tub fill level:

Graphic displayed Fill level
approx. 4.3 l to 7.25 l
Approx. 2.5 l to 4.3 l
Approx. 0.5 l to 2.5 l
Residual water in tub.
The tank must be refilled.
Device automatically switches off after 6 hours.
The device has switched itself off due to safety reasons. Clean and refill the device before next use.

The air washer is switched off by pressing the On/off button on the upper side.
Regularly check the water level gauge during operation and refill the tub if necessary.

information Note:

  • The actual humidification output depends on the ambient conditions and the air contact with the humidification discs. In principle, the lower the relative air humidity, the higher the humidification, and the greater the damp contact surface with the air, the higher the humidification.
  • The LCD illumination reduces 5 seconds after a button has been pressed. The reduced display illumination enables the device to be operated in bedrooms.
  • Use fan level 1 to operate the device during the night.

Usage with an external timer

Switch the device to the desired ventilation level and then disconnect the plug (without turning the device off with the ON/OFF button). Connect the timer between the plug and the socket and the air washer will turn on at the desired time at the previously selected ventilation level.

Replacing silver ion pads

You should replace the silver ion pads with new ones after approx. 1 year

  1. Disconnect the air washer from the socket.
  2. Remove the humidification discs using the holder.
  3. Empty any remaining water from the water tank.
  4. Unlock the water level sensor and remove it.
  5. Replace the Silber Ionen Pads as shown.
  6. Reinstall the water level sensor and the humidification discs into the tank.
  7. Fill the tank with fresh, cold tap water at most up to the lower edge of the "MAX" (7.2 l) marking on the inside of the tank and put the upper cover back on again.
  8. Connect the mains plug to the socket and switch the air washer on.

information Note

  • When not using the device, dry the silver ion pads to ensure reusability.

Cleaning and maintenance

Regular cleaning is a prerequisite for hygienic and fault-free operation.
The air washer can be dismantled easily and without tools for cleaning.
Always empty and thoroughly clean the air washer if the device contains water and has not been operated for longer than 3 days.
A lack of cleaning and hygiene can cause bacteria and fungi to form in the water.

Rinsing the tub

Rinse out the tub every 2 weeks with clean water. If the air is heavily polluted, the device is used intensively or the water quality is poor, the air washer must be cleaned at shorter intervals. If necessary, remove any deposits in the tub using a plastic brush.

Cleaning the fan unit

You can wipe the fan unit with a damp cloth. However, make sure that no liquid enters the fan unit.

Cleaning the upper cover

Remove the fan unit to more easily clean the upper cover. To do so, slide the 4 locks to the outside and remove the fan unit.

When using hard water, the silver ion pads may calcify. In the event of use in air humidification and air washing, the product must not be used in combination with other additives, medication or remedies.

When putting the fan unit down, ensure that it does not come to rest on the water level sensor.

Cleaning the humidification discs and tub

You can wipe the humidification discs and tub with a damp cloth or clean them thoroughly and easily in the dishwasher. Lift off the upper cover, remove the humidification discs from the tub and place them in the dishwasher. Unlock the water level sensor (Figure 1) and remove it (Figure 2). If there is insufficient space in the dishwasher, create extra space by removing the cutlery basket, for example. The humidification discs and tub must not be bent or jammed when being placed in the dishwasher.
Cleaning the humidification discs and tub
Set the dishwasher to a gentle cycle (for cleaning glass) and if possible remove the part before the drying process. The cycle must not exceed a temperature of 40°C – otherwise the plastic parts may deform. Only continue to use the device when the exterior of the tub is completely dry.

Clean the water level sensor

You can clean the lower half of the water level sensor in a cleaning bath. Ensure that the upper half of the water level sensor is not exposed to any harsh cleaning products. The water level sensor must not be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Descaling the humidification discs and the tub

Depending on water hardness and if necessary, the tub and humidification discs must be descaled in order to maintain the performance of the air washer.
For this purpose, use a standard descaling agent and observe the information on the label.
Note: A light build-up of limescale on the humidification discs increases the evaporation effect.

Storage

If you do not plan to use the device for a relatively long period of time, we recommend that you thoroughly empty, clean and dry the device and store it in the original packing in a dry environment, ensuring it is not weighed down by additional items.
