Electrical connection

4.1

General recommendations

WARNING
High voltage! Electrical shock hazard! The compressor must always have
the ground wire attached to the compressor terminal f ence. The other end of
the ground wire must be connected to the appropriate ground terminal on the
drive.
Disconnect and lock out power before servicing. Allow drive components to
electrically discharge before servicing. Respect the time according to drive
manual bef ore servicing the drive. Use compressor with grounded system
only. Refer to original equipment wiring diagrams. Electrical connections must
be made by qualified electrical personnel.
CAUTION
High voltage! Drive damage! An optional unit contactor or switch can be
installed upstream of the drive, not between the drive and the compressor.
Major f aults and irreversible damage to the drive can occur if the drive output
is open-circuit while the compressor is running.
WARNING
Ignition source in a potentially flammable atmosphere! Fire hazard! The
electrical connection of the scroll compressors is not an ignition source during
normal operation but could become one if not installed properly according to
installation instructions. Ensure correct mechanical and electrical installation.
System capacitors may remain charged f or several minutes af ter shutdown.
Bef ore starting to work on the electrical installation make sure sparking is not
possible. Continuously check if the ambient atmosphere is non-f lammable
when working on the electrical installation.
Bef ore connecting the compressor and the drive to the power network, make sure that all the cables
to and f rom the drive and to the compressor are correctly connected and that the supply voltage,
phases and frequency match the drive nameplate data.
The wiring should remain physically separated to minimize the introduction of electrical noise.
For saf ety reasons, Emerson recommends that the electrical installation be executed in compliance
with standard EN 60204-1 and/or other standards and regulations of application. The wiring must
conf orm to local regulations and codes of practice.
NOTE: The drive assembly contains accessories such as chokes and EMC filter, which are
part of the drive. For detailed list and description of accessories please refer to the ED3 & EV3
User Manuals.
4.2

Electrical installation

WARNING
Conductor cables! Electrical shock hazard! Shut off power supply before
undertaking any task on electrical equipment.
For recommended wiring diagrams, see Figures 20 & 21.
NOTE: If the ED3 or EV3 drive has a safe torque off (STO) input complying with EN 60335, this
input can be used to connect the safety chain with, eg, the high-pressure limiter to the drive,
and the contactor K2 is optional. In all other cases, the contactor K2 is mandatory to comply
with EN 60335.
NOTE: The combination of YHV*RG and YHV*RT compressors with inverters can cause earth
leakage currents, both AC and DC, due to the presence of the inverter and an EMC filter in the
system. Therefore, an AC/DC-sensitive Residual Current Device (RCD) type B or B+ must be
used on the power supply side.
NOTE: For recommendations about the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and details
about wiring up the drive assembly, please refer to the ED3 & EV3 User Manuals.
