Safety instructions Copeland scroll variable-speed compressors and Emerson motor control drives are manuf actured according to the latest relevant US and European safety standards.
  • Page 7: Safety Statements

Safety statements Refrigerant compressors must be employed only for their intended use. The system has to be labelled according to the applicable standards and legislation. Only qualified and authorized RACHP (refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump personnel) are permitted to install, commission and maintain this equipment. Only competent personnel (as specified in EN 13313) qualified for flammable refrigerant handling is permitted to commission, initiate and maintain the compressor/refrigeration systems;...

Compressor design 2.7.1 Compressor features The variable-speed scroll YHV*RG/RT compressors have a number of design features that improve ef f iciency and reliability. A HVE valve in the discharge port of the scroll is part of these models for higher performance at high pressure ratio.

Installation WARNING High pressure! Injury to skin and eyes possible! Be careful when opening connections on a pressurized item. Compressor and drive handling WARNING Static electricity! Personal injuries! Personnel handling the drives in a manuf acturing plant environment should guard against static electricity by using the appropriate equipment, eg, antistatic wrist straps and mats.

  • Page 19 CAUTION Contamination or moisture! Bearing failure! Do not remove the connection plugs until the compressor is set into the unit. This minimises any entry of contaminants and moisture. Copeland scroll compressors have copper-plated steel suction and discharge stub tubes. These stub tubes are f ar more robust and less prone to leaks than copper tubes.

  • Page 21: Crankcase Heating Function

A discharge temperature control is mandatory to stop the compressor when the maximum discharge temperature is exceeded see section 3.7 "Discharge gas temperature protection". Additional warning notices shall be af fixed to any system equipped with shut -off valves. The warnings must contain instructions to open the shut-off valves completely af ter each repair or maintenance work.
  • Page 22: Excessive Discharge Gas Temperatures

In order to ensure positive compressor protection, discharge gas temperature protection is required f or any application with Copeland compressors. The maximum discharge gas temperature is 135 °C f or all YHV*RG and YHV*RT models. Discharge gas temperature protection is the "fall-back" for failure of the system control. It is essential that proper control of both the evaporating and condensing pressures and the superheat is maintained and has the ability to cope with all likely conditions and high loads.
  • Page 23: Discharge Temperature Control Mode

It is theref ore up to the user to define by system tests if and when (where in the envelope) the DLT control is required. Solution with SEC Mono Emerson has developed an optional solution with controller SEC Mono to control the ref rigerant circuit with matched pairs of compressors YHV*RG/RT with ED3/EV3 drive. The main f unctionalities provided are: compressor speed and operating map control according to section 2.

Choose a muffler with a length of 10 to 15 cm. 3.11 Sound shell At this time, no sound shell attenuation for YHV*RG/RT compressors is available from Emerson. If a sound shell is needed, particular attention shall be paid to the electrostatic charge of the insulation material, which could be a potential ignition source see EN 60079-0, clause 7.4.
  • Page 25: Sound And Vibration

the pressures equalize. This condition does not af f ect compressor durability but can cause unexpected sound after the compressor is turned off. The pref erred method of mitigating defrost sound for the variable-speed scroll is to is to shut down the compressor when the reversing valve changes position going into and coming out of the defrost cycle.
  • Page 26 A sample compressor equipped with an external oil sight tube can be ordered from Emerson for lab testing. Records of the evaporating temperature and the bottom shell temperature shall be taken with a high sampling rate during the entire oil return or oil balance testing and under all tested conditions.

Please contact the Application Engineering department at Emerson for more information. 3.16 Suction line accumulator def rost cycle operation, an accumulator is not required in most systems.
  • Page 28: Electrical Connection

The wiring should remain physically separated to minimize the introduction of electrical noise. For saf ety reasons, Emerson recommends that the electrical installation be executed in compliance with standard EN 60204-1 and/or other standards and regulations of application. The wiring must conf orm to local regulations and codes of practice.

DO NOT USE other industrial gases. 5.1.1 Compressor strength-pressure test The compressor has been strength-pressure tested in the Emerson f actory. As the compressor complies with EN 60335-2-34, it is not necessary for the manufacturer to strength-pressure test the compressor again.

Maintenance & repair WARNING Conductor cables! Electrical shock hazard! Follow the lockout/tag out procedure and the national regulations before undertaking any maintenance or service work on the system. Use compressor with grounded system only. Screwed electrical connections must be used in all applications. Refer to original equipment wiring diagrams. Electrical connections must be made by qualified electrical personnel.

Preparation and work procedure A work procedure shall be provided in the preparation stage. All maintenance staff and other personnel working at the site shall be instructed on the nature of the work being executed. To disconnect: Using a pipe cutting tool, cut off the suction and discharge lines in such a manner that the new compressor can easily be re-connected into the system. Heat joint areas 2 and 3 slowly and uniformly until the braze material sof tens and the tube end can be pulled out of the f itting.
  • Page 41: Compressor Return Procedure

Since PAG holds moisture, it is more dif ficult to remove it through the use of vacuum. Compressors supplied by Emerson contain oil with low moisture content, and it may rise during the system assembling process. Theref ore, it is recommended that a properly s ized f ilter dryer be installed in all PAG systems.
  • Page 42: Oil Additives

(h=hours) Oil additives Although Emerson cannot comment on any specific product, f rom our own testing and past experience, we do not recommend the use of any additives to reduce compressor bearing losses or f or any other purpose. Furthermore, the long-term chemical stability of any additive in the presence of ref rigerant, low and high temperatures, and materials commonly found in ref rigeration systems is complex and difficult to evaluate without rigorously controlled chemical laboratory testing.
  • Page 43: Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting WARNING Conductor cables! Electrical shock hazard! Bef ore attempting any electrical troubleshooting, make sure all grounds are connected and secure and there is ground continuity throughout the compressor system. Also ensure the compressor system is correctly grounded to the power supply. If you are not a qualif ied service person f amiliar with electrical troubleshooting techniques, DO NOT PROCEED until a qualified service person is available.
