Facts you must know about body
temperature
Body temperature regulation
The term 'body temperature' refers to the
temperature of the blood flowing through the
vital organs inside the body, the so-called 'core
body temperature'.
The brain regulates your body temperature, much
like a thermostat regulates your home
temperature, by balancing heating and cooling in
response to your temperature sensors, which are
mainly inside your brain and on your skin. All body
tissues produce heat: your heart, liver, brain and
muscles create the most. Excess heat is lost
through the skin.To cool down, the blood vessels
in the skin expand, blood flows to the skin surface
and heat is released. Sweating will help your body
dispose of excess heat by the cooling effect of
evaporation.To conserve heat, blood vessels
constrict, less blood flows to the surface and the
skin cools, thus reducing heat loss. If your sensors
indicate that even more heat is required to
maintain normal temperature, then you will shiver.
This system makes it possible to maintain a fairly
constant body temperature, regardless of the
temperature of the surrounding environment.
