WARNING
• The backrest must always be securely latched so that the
safety belt can work properly to help protect the occupant .
• The backrest must be securely latched in position so that no
items contained in the luggage compartment can slide forward
upon sudden braking .
• Never allow safety belts to become damaged by being caught
in door or seat hardware .
• Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and damaged belt hardware
can break in a crash. Inspect the belts per iodically. Belts showing
damage to webbing , binding s, buckles, or retractor s must be
replaced.

In a coll ision, th e laws of physics mean t hat even sma lle r items that
are loose in t he vehicle will t urn in to heavy mi ssiles t hat can cause
ser ious injury. Items i n th e vehic le pick up kinetic ene rgy which
var ies with vehic le and the weigh t of the item. The vehicle speed is
t he mos t sign if icant factor.
For example , in a frontal collision at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/h),
th e f o rces acti n g o n a 10 lbs (4.5 kg) o bj ect are abo ut 20 times th e
normal weight of the item . This means tha t the we ight of the item
w ou ld sud denly be abou t 200 lbs (90 kg). One can easi ly i magi ne t he
injuries that an item of that wei g ht flying freely through the
passenger compa rtment can cause in a coll ision at a speed con sid-
ered relat ively low . .,
