As safety depends on the ELV Relay functioning correctly it is highly recommended that all safety functions of the ELV Relay be periodically tested to ensure correct operation. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 6 of 40...
Equipment that is found to be damaged or has been modified away from its published specification must not be used. Please contact Ampcontrol if the equipment is suspected to be different than that ordered or if it does not match the published specifications.
3 PRODUCT OVERVIEW 3.1 ELV Earth Leakage Relay The Ampcontrol ELV Earth Leakage Relay is electronic in design and is based on microprocessor technology. It is designed to AS/NZS 2081:2011 Section 6. The ELV Relay uses patented technology (AU2011264414) to characterise earth leakage currents giving superior fault discrimination, particularly in applications involving switching power electronics and variable speed drives.
(refer to AS/NZS 3190). The ELV Earth Leakage Relay continually monitors the toroid and if the connection is lost the relay will trip and flash the ‘CT Fault’ LED. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 9 of 40...
The ELV Relay is designed to be panel mounted, however a DIN rail mounting kit can be separately purchased. Figure 3.4: DIN Rail Mounting Kit (Suit ELM / ELD / ELV) Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 10 of 40...
Figure 3.5: Lockable Cover (Suit ELM / ELD / ELV Relay) 3.2.4 ELCF Adaptor (Part Number 120255) This accessory allows users of the obsolete ELCF Earth Leakage Relay to upgrade to Ampcontrol’s next generation of earth leakage relays. The ELCF Adaptor seals the larger hole left by the ELCF Relay and provides a mounting point for the ELV Relay.
3.2.6 BRAMCO ELF Adaptor (Part Number 175279) This adaptor kit allows users of the BRAMCO ELF and ELF2 Relays to transfer to Ampcontrol’s next generation of earth leakage relays. The ELF Adaptor seals the larger hole (90 x 90 mm) left by the ELF Relay and provides a mounting point for the ELV Relay.
It is extremely important that the limitations and functionality of the ELV Relay are understood to prevent incorrect installation and use from creating a potentially dangerous risk. If in doubt as to the nature of the limitations or their implication, consult a competent authority such as a supervisor or Ampcontrol technical representative.
4.3.2 DIN Rail Mounting A separately purchasable mounting kit is available for mounting the ELV Relay onto a DIN rail. See the equipment list in Section 10. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 14 of 40...
Only the later EL500 toroid is suitable. This is denoted by the "N" designator at the end of the core type. For this toroid is it W-20N. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 15 of 40...

These terminals are for the connection of the ELV’s earth leakage toroid. The ELV Earth Leakage Relay is designed for use with Ampcontrol EL500S series 100:1 Toroids. They are available with window sizes 25, 60, & 112 mm. These allow trip settings from 30 mA to 2.5 A.

20 mA represents an earth leakage current of 120 % of the trip level. The 4-20 mA output should be wired as per Figure 4.6. NOTE Ampcontrol does not recommend using the 4-20 mA output as the main tripping signal. All tripping should be carried out by the provided output relays.

WARNING! All repairs must be carried out by Ampcontrol only. If a fault develops, return the ELV Relay to Ampcontrol for repair. It is essential that no attempt be made to repair the ELV Relay as any attempt to dismantle or repair the ELV Relay can seriously compromise the safety of the unit and voids product warranty.

Operating regions to the right of the designated curves are assumed to represent an ‘unacceptable’ risk of fibrillation, even though they may be as low as reasonably achievable in some instances. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 29 of 40...
The protective device, such as an Ampcontrol ELV Earth Leakage Relay, would then isolate the cable and contain the sparking within the cable before a heavy short circuit current due to a phase-to-phase fault occurs.

Select the smallest internal diameter toroid, which will allow the cables to fit through. Avoid very large toroids (200 mm) or toroids with square apertures. The ELV Relay has been designed for use with the Ampcontrol EL500S series of toroids. For ordering part numbers, refer to the Equipment List in Section 10.

Australian mining operations is 5 A, and the requirement for a 10:1 tripping ratio indicates the earth leakage trip level should be no more than 500 mA. Uncontrolled Copy - Refer to Ampcontrol Website for Latest Version Page 37 of 40...
It is impractical for the user to utilise these curve sets directly in touch potential calculations. Both Ampcontrol VSDguard and ELV Relays are capable of weighting the wideband E/L current as a function of frequency according to the curve sets in AS/NZS 60479. This weighting accounts for the differing effects of frequency on fibrillation risk automatically, and while the actual current measurement is wideband, the weighting produces a ’50 Hz equivalent risk’...
