QR-EC and EC
Hor. Sidewall Sprinklers and
Rec. Hor. Sidewall Sprinklers
Star Galaxy™ SGQR and SG
K=8.0
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Star Galaxy SGQR and SG, 8.0 K-Factor, QR-EC
and EC Horizontal Sidewall and Recessed Horizontal
Sidewall Sprinklers are extended coverage, decorative
glass bulb type spray sprinklers designed for use in hy-
draulically calculated sprinkler systems in light, commer-
cial occupancies such as churches, restaurant seasting
areas, hotels, educational facilities, offices, etc. With cov-
erage areas up to 16 feet (4,9 m) wide by 24 feet (7,3 m)
long, they are designed for installation along a wall or the
side of a beam and just beneath a smooth and level ceil-
ing. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are commonly used in-
stead of pendent or upright sprinklers because of aesthet-
ics or building construction considerations, where piping
across the ceiling is not desirable.
The SGQR (3 mm bulb type) is for quick response ex-
tended coverage applications, and in some cases stand-
ard response extended coverage applications. The SG (5
mm bulb type) is only for standard response extended
coverage applications. Refer to Tables A-1 and A-2 for de-
tails.
The recessed version of the Star Galaxy SGQR and SG,
intended for use in areas with concealed piping and a fin-
ished wall, uses a two-piece #2086 or #2088 Recessed
Escutcheon. The #2086 provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of re-
cessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total ad-
justment from the flush sidewall position, and the #2088
provides 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or
up to 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of total adjustment from the
flush sidewall position. The adjustment provided by the
Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the
fixed pipe nipples to the sprinklers must be cut.

OPERATION
The glass bulb contains a fluid which expands when ex-
posed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached,
the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb,
which then allows the sprinkler to activate and flow water.
