Grinder settings

Grinder settings can only be adjusted when the grinder is in operation. You can adjust the grinder to suit the roast of your coffee beans. We recommend that you leave the grinder on a medium setting.

  • Open the lid of the bean con tainer
  • Turn the control knob to the desired position while the grinder is running. The smaller the dot, the finer the coffee is ground.

    Remember:
    • a light roast requires a finer grind
    • dark roast requires a coarser grind

Try out the different settings to find the one that best meets your personal preferences.

Making coffee

Note: The machine is preset for immediate use. However, we recommend that you first adjust the most important settings to suit your personal needs. Please follow the instructions in chapter ('programming functions') for filter, temperature, automatic standby and water hardness settings.

Note: When the machine is brand new or has not been used for an extended period, the first cup of coffee does not have the full aroma and should not be drunk.

Selecting coffee strength

There are three levels of coffee strength to which you can adjust the brewing unit. They are shown in the display as follows:
MILD, '1 bean' (Symbol 9): about 7g of ground coffee, e.g. for café latte or cappuccino
NORMAL, '2 beans' (Symbol 10): about 9g of ground coffee e.g. for American coffee
STARK, '3 beans' (Symbol 11): about 11g of ground coffee e.g. for espresso or very strong coffee.
As soon as the machine is operational, the display shows the default setting (Symbol 8, 'cup', and Symbol 10, '2 beans').

  • You can change this setting by pressing the button repeatedly until the desired coffee strength appears in the display

Select water quantity

You can freely select the quantity of water used by turning the water quantity control knob, the dot scale indicating the current setting. The little cup bottom left represents less water, the large cup bottom right represents more water.

Tip: The water quantity can be ad justed while the machine is running. Try out various cup sizes and quantities to find the setting that best suits your personal preferences.

Making one cup of coffee

  • Place your (pre-heated) cup un der the coffee spout

The coffee spout is height-adjust- able and can be raised or lowered to best suit the cup size.

  • Set the desired coffee strength and water quantity.
  • Press the 1-cup button.
  • The machine now starts the grinding and brewing operation.

The brewing operation can be stopped at any point by pressing either the 1-cup or 2-cup button

The first time you brew a coffee, the grinding chamber is still empty. The symbol for 'add beans' (Symbol 12, 3 beans) begins to flash and no coffee is produced. If this occurs, simply press the 1-cup button again and the operation is repeated.

Tip: To determine the ideal quant- ity of water for your taste or cup size, make your first cup of coffee as follows:

  • Turn the water quantity control knob to one of the following positions:
    • To the middle of the dot scale for an espresso cup.
    • To the far right for a large cup.
  • Press the 1-cup button

The machine starts brewing.

  • Shortly before the desired amount of coffee is reached, turn the water quantity control knob slowly to the left until the machine stops brewing.
  • For future use, note where on the dot scale the water quantity control knob is now pointing.

Brewing two cups

In the 2-cup operation, two grind ings of coffee are done consecutively.

  • Place both (pre-heated) cups under the coffee spout
  • Select the desired coffee strength and water quantity sett- ings for one cup
  • Press the 2-cup button
  • The machine now starts the grinding and brewing operation and produces two consecutive cups of coffee.

Tip:

  • The brewing operation can be stopped at any point by pressing the 1-cup button or 2-cup button.
    • If the water or bean supply runs out or the trays need emptying between brewing the first cup and the second, the appropriate symbol (Symbols 12, 13 or 17) will appear in the display and the second coffee will no longer be made. Follow the display screen and then press only the 1-cup button for the second cup.

Using pre-ground coffee

  • First turn the water quantity control knob to the desired amount for one cup.
  • Open the lid of the pre-ground coffee chamber
  • Add a level measuring spoon of ground coffee and close the lid again (Symbols 8, 11 and 14 appear).
  • Place a cup under the coffee spout and press the 'brew' button for one cup

Note: If the pre-ground coffee chamber is left open by accident or no brew button is pressed after ground coffee is added, the machine will automatically be rinsed out via the coffee spout a minute after the lid is closed. It is then operational again.

The pre-ground coffee chamber is not a storage container. Never add more than one measure at a time to the chamber, and use only fresh or vacuum-packed coffee ground from beans. Do not use instant coffee powder!

Drawing hot water/making tea

  • Hold a cup under the jet
  • Turn the steam / hot water valve control knob to the right. Hot water comes out of the jet and Symbol 16, 'steam / hot water', flashes.
  • Fill the cup up to the desired level and turn the valve control knob back to '0'.

Risk of scalding!
Watch out for splashes. The jet be comes very hot during use. Leave to cool for a few minutes be fore touching, or only touch the plastic parts.

Drawing steam

  • Press the steam warm-up button. The 'steam / hot water' symbol (Symbol 15) flashes.
  • As soon as the system is ready, Symbol 16 starts flashing and Symbol 15 lights up without flashing.
  • Dip the jet into the cup with the liquid to be heated.
  • Make sure that the 'spumatore' control knob is pointing to '0' (steam symbol).
  • Turn the steam / hot water valve control knob to the right.

Some water will come out before the steam.
  • The operation is completed by turning the control knob back to '0'.
  • Press the steam warm-up button and the machine switches back to normal coffee-brewing mode.

Note:

  • Steam can be produced for about 2 minutes. Then the machine will automatically switch the operation off. You can prolong the operation by turning the control knob back and forth.
  • It is hard to remove dried milk left on the jet after frothing. Please therefore clean the equipment as soon as it has cooled down – ideally repeat the steam drawing operation in a cup with clean cold water.

Risk of scalding!
The steam which comes out is very hot. Only touch the black plastic parts of the jet.

Frothing milk, hot milk and cappuccino

  • With the special 'spumatore' frothing device you can heat up milk straight from the carton or from a container and then froth it into the cup.
  • Dip the inlet hose straight into the milk carton or container.
  • Place a cup under the 'spu matore' jet.

Then press the steam warm-up button. The 'steam / hot water' symbols (Symbol 15) flash.

  • As soon as the system is ready, Symbol 16 starts flashing and Symbol 15 lights up.
  • For cappuccino: now turn the 'spumatore' control knob to the left so that it points to 'cappuccino'.
  • For hot milk, turn the 'spu- matore' control knob to the right so that it points to 'caffè latte'.
  • Turn the steam / hot water valve control knob slowly to the right.
  • As soon as the desired amount of milk foam or hot milk has been drawn, turn the steam / hot water valve control knob back left to the '0' position.
  • Press the steam warm-up button again
  • Now place the cup with the frothed up or hot milk under the coffee spout and fill with coffee as described above.

It is hard to remove dried milk left on the jet after frothing. Please therefore clean the equipment as soon as it has cooled down.

  • To do this, fill a container with cold clean water, and dip the inlet hose into it.
  • Place an empty container under the 'spumatore' jet
  • Now draw steam until only clean water / steam flows out.
  • Now the whole 'spumatore' mechanism is clean and operational again.

Cleaning:
For optimal cleaning the 'spumatore' must be dismantled from time to time and its parts rinsed under fresh, cold water. It is easy to take apart and reas semble.

Note: Steam can be drawn for about 2 minutes. Then the machine will automatically switch the operation off. You can prolong the operation by turning the control knob back and forth.

Programming functions

The following buttons are used for programming functions: Service button 'S' = programming mode / confirmation button

Coffee strength button = Selection button
On / Off button = cancel

Note that functions can only be programmed when the On / Off button is switched to 'Off' (stand-by mode).

You can program / re-program the following functions:
Operation with / without filter ='Change filter' (Symbol 20)
Water hardness = 'Descale machine' (Symbol 18)
Temperature = 'Coffee ready' (Symbol 8)
Automatic stand-by = 'Water / steam open / closed' (Symbol 16)

Filter

Inserting filter:
A special filter for the water reservoir is included in the machine accessories. If you use this filter correctly you will not need to descale your coffee machine as often (recommended: about twice yearly, see point 5.4, 'descaling'). So that the machine knows that the filter has been inserted, you must change the filter setting to 'On'. The default setting is 'without filter'.

The current setting is designated by the following symbols:

  • Function setting for filter ON: Symbols 14 and 9 light up
  • Function setting for filter OFF: Symbol 14 alone lights up.
  • Switch your machine off (standby mode) by pressing the On / Off button
  • Press and hold the Service button for about 4 seconds to enter programming mode.
  • Symbols 20, 18, 8 and 16 light up and rotate sequentially in the display.
  • Wait until the filter symbol (Symbol 20) lights up and press the Selection button
  • Symbol 14 starts to flash.
  • Press the Selection button until both Symbols 14 and 9 ('filter ON') flash.
  • Press and hold the Service button for about 4 seconds to confirm. Symbols 13, 16 and 20 flash.

  • Fill up the reservoir with fresh water and replace it in the machine. Symbol 16 flashes.
  • Hold a container under the steam / hot water jet and turn the control knob to the right to open. The system will now be rinsed out.
  • Wait until no more water comes out of the jet for a short time and turn the control knob back to the left to close.

If water continues to come out of the jet after a short while, the system is also ready. If this occurs, turn the control knob back to the left anyway.
  • The system briefly warms up (Symbol 8 flashes) and is then operational again.
  • Note: The Service button may still flash. Press the button and the system will briefly be rinsed out via the coffee spout.

If you use a filter for your machine and have changed the function setting to 'filter ON', the water hardness and manual descaling functions will no longer be shown. The filter loses its efficiency after processing about 50 l of water

If the machine is rarely used and so the 'CHANGE FILTER' signal does not appear in the dis play, the filter must be replaced anyway after no longer than two months (see chapter 'Washing filter manually').

Operating without a filter:
If you no longer wish to use a filter, the filter setting must be changed back to 'filter OFF'. This is important, as without a filter the machine must be descaled (the machine is delivered in the default setting 'Without filter').

  • Switch your machine off (standby mode) by pressing the On / Off button
  • Press and hold the Service button for about 4 seconds to enter programming mode.
  • Symbols 20, 8 and 16 light up and rotate sequentially in the display.

The default setting is level 3, indicated by Symbols 14 and 10.

First, test your water with the test strips provided:

  • Dip the strip into the water and then shake it lightly off.
  • After about a minute you can read the result by counting the red dots on the test strip.
  • The settings corresponding to the different levels of hardness are as follows:

Test strip / hardness level = Symbol
for setting:
1 red dot / 1–7° = 14
2 red dots / 8–14° = 14 and 9
3 red dots / 15–21° = 14 and 10
4 red dots / > 21° = 14 and 11

Note: If none of the dots turn red on the test strip, please set level 1, Symbol 14.

  • Switch your machine off (standby mode) by pressing the On / Off button
  • Press and hold the Service button for about 4 seconds to enter programming mode.
  • Symbols 20, 18, 8 and 16 light up and rotate sequentially in the display. (The symbol for water hardness, Symbol 18, does not appear if the filter function is set to 'ON').
