The Expansion Ports
One of the key features of the X-Frame 88 are the Expansion Ports. These ports allow you expand the number of inputs and
outputs (I/O) that can be used with the X-Frame 88. Because the DPU engine of the X-Frame 88 is so powerful, it is likely that
in most cases, you will not exhaust its resources using only the local I/O capability of eight inputs and eight outputs. The
Expansion Ports provide a way to maximize your resources by adding up to 16 additional inputs and outputs. In this section,
we will explore the Expansion Ports, their software components and the many possible configurations that can be implemented
to expand the X-Frame 88.
There are two Expansion Ports, "A" and "B". Each port includes separate TX (transmit) and RX (receive) RJ-45 connectors for
interfacing with standard Category 5 (CAT 5) cables. Each cable can extend up to 50 feet between the X-Frame 88 and the
expansion product. Each Expansion Port provides an additional eight inputs (RX) and eight outputs (TX) of digital audio I/O.
This I/O can be configured within the X-Ware software in the same way as the local I/O and BoB I/O.
It is very important to understand the relationship between the physical I/O connectors and their software counterparts. Each
Expansion Port includes software I/O "blocks" that are used to "wire" audio inside the X-Frame 88 DPU. These blocks are sim-
iliar to the blocks used for local analog I/O and are wired the same way. Fig X below shows each block and their relationship to
the Expansion Port.
NOTE: When using the MM-8802, a special
BoB I/O block is used in lieu of the Link
block. The BoB block includes specific fun-
tionality for the MM-8802.
