General Information Product Description The Universal Film Maker (UFM) manufactured by Spectra-Tech provides an easy-to-use and highly reproducible method of pressing polymers into thin films. The simplified construction of the UFM, comprised of only 4 major parts, makes sample preparation quick, convenient and economical.

Operation Using the Universal Film Maker Insulation Plates The special plates isolate the UFM from the Hydraulic Press. They are made of Transite HT (a non-asbestos material). The use of the plates maintains the temperature within a couple of degrees of the set temperature. The insulation plates retain the heat in the Film Maker and prevent the Hydraulic Press from heating up.
  • Page 10 Operation Using the Universal Film Maker Adjust Press Pressure Increase the pressure of the hydraulic press until the desired pressure is reached, a good starting point is about 1/2 ton (1000 psi). Note: Do not exceed two tons (4000 psi); A half ton (1000 psi) is sufficient for most purposes. Allow the film maker to remain under pressure for two to four minutes.
  • Page 11: Sample Information

Sample Information Pressing and Sample Preparation Pre-Crushing of Sample To prevent damage to the platens, samples should not be pressed in the film maker while it is cold. The Spectra-Tech macro-micro die (P/N 0016-009) is recommended for samples that require pre-crushing at ambient temperature. Amount of Sample To determine the optimum amount of sample to load for any given thickness, some experimentation will be required.
