Float Charge – Float charge is the standby/maintenance charge state where the battery is held to a lower constant
voltage. This state is indicated by the green output voltage LED. If the battery charger indicates that the battery
voltage drops below the return-to-bulk voltage parameter level or if current exceeds 5 amps, the battery charger
enters bulk charge state.
From Float to Equalize occurs if manual equalize charge state is enabled.
o
From Float to Bulk occurs when voltage output drops below the return to bulk parameter setting for more
o
than the minimum return to bulk timer. When the current exceeds 50% of the rated current.
WARNING
Battery gases. Explosion can cause severe injury or death. Incorrect use of the equalize charge state may lead to
hazardous situations. Equalization is ONLY applicable for flooded lead acid (FLA) type batteries and will damage gel,
absorbed glass mat (AGM), or nickel‐cadmium (NiCad) type batteries. In the controller menu or SiteTech™ settings, verify that
the battery topology is set correctly for the battery type used. Do not smoke or permit flames, sparks, or other sources of
ignition to occur near a battery at any time.
Equalize Charge – The equalize charge state can be necessary after very deep discharges and/or inadequate
charges. In this state, the charger outputs the equalize voltage with a current limit set to the equalize current (default
is 1 amp). Equalize charge state is set at default to the OFF position but can be set to either manual or automatic with
SiteTech™ or through the controller menus.
When set to either manual or automatic, the equalize charge state follows the absorption charge state before the float
charge state; however, if in the float charge state when equalize charge is manually selected, equalize charge state
occurs immediately and returns to float charge state upon completion. The charger remains in equalize charge state
for a minimum of 30 seconds.
The equalize charge must be carried out according to the specifications of the battery manufacturer.
From Equalize to Float occurs when the voltage reaches the equalize voltage parameter, when maximum
o
equalize time is reached, or when auto equalize or manual equalize are disabled.
From Equalize to Bulk occurs when the voltage drops below the return to bulk voltage parameter setting.
o
Refresh Charge – When in the float charge state, the charger has a two-week refresh cycle and raises the charge
level to the bulk voltage setting for a duration of 1-hour. Following the 1-hour time interval, the charger returns to float
charge state. If the voltage on the charger is raised by another charger or by an alternator while in float charge state,
the refresh timer is reset.
Idle– Idle is a holding state when the charger does not sense that a battery is connected or the charger is starting up
and running a power on self-test (POST). In this state, the output is turned off and the voltage internal to the charger
fluctuates to detect the connection of a valid battery.
16
Explosion.
Can cause severe injury or death.
Relays in the battery charger cause arcs or sparks.
Locate the battery in a well‐ventilated area. Isolate the battery charger from explosive
fumes.
