Always keep the engine running and in gear

when driving on downhill gradients and slopes.
Observe the notes on driving in mountainous
terrain.
Do not drive on unknown terrain that is not

easily visible and stay on marked routes.
Always keep the doors and windows closed

while the vehicle is in motion.
Deactivate Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC,

cruise control and the variable limiter.
Adapt your driving style to the terrain.

Do not use the HOLD function on steep down-
R
hill or uphill gradients with slippery or loose
surfaces.

When driving on sand, also observe the following
instructions:
Switch to the Desert drive program (availabil-
R
ity depending on country) (

Shi to a lower gear.

Drive quickly to overcome the rolling resist-
R
ance; the vehicle may otherwise dig itself in.
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles if possi-
R
ble. Make sure that the following prerequisites
are met:
the tyre ruts are not too deep

the sand is rm enough

the ground clearance is su cient

Lower the tyre pressure in all four wheels.

Contrary to the information on the tyre pres-
sure plate (fuel ller ap), you can lower the
tyre pressure to 120 kPa (1.2 bar/17.4 psi).

Once you stop driving on sand, immediately
increase the tyre pressure again.
Information on the recommended tyre pres-
sure for the vehicle's factory- tted tyres can
