Never modify or tamper with
the seat belts and the child
restraining systems.
Rearward-facing child seats
must not be used on front
passenger seats equipped
with active passenger's airbag, as this
2
could cause serious injuries during
deployment, independently of the
impact severity. Rearward-facing
child seats may be used on the front
passenger seat only in European
vehicle models, that are equipped
with passenger's airbag deactivation
switch. In this case, the driver
must make sure that the airbag is
deactivated by checking the warning
light
on the instrument panel.
The European Community regulations
that govern the transport of children
are found in directive 2003/20/EC.
26
This directive divides restraint systems
into fi ve groups:
Group 0
0-10 kg
(0-22 lb)
Group 0 + up to 13 kg
(up to 27 lb)
Group 1
9-18 kg
(20-40 lb)
Group 2
15-25 kg
(33-55 lb)
Group 3
22-36 kg
(49-79 lb)
As can be seen, the groups partially
overlap and commercially available
systems may cover more than one
weight group.
All the restraining systems must bear
the approval data, together with the
check mark on a plate - which must
never be removed - fi xed soundly to
the system itself.
For the purposes of restraint systems,
children weighing more than 36 kg
(79 lb) and taller than 1,50 m (59 in)
are considered equivalent to adults
weight;
and wear the seat belts in the normal
way.
