Once the lock nuts are secured, check to make sure the seat pivots up and down freely. See the inset in Figure 5.     NOTE: Any reference in this manual to the RIGHT or LEFT side of the tractor is observed from operator’s seat position facing forward towards the front of tractor. Meets ANSI Safety Standards Craftsman Tractors conform to the safety standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
  • Page 16 OPERATION IMPORTANT: Never force the shift lever. Doing so may result in Throttle / Choke Control serious damage to the tractor’s transmission. The throttle control lever is located on the left fender of the tractor as seen from the operator’s position, see Fig. 14. This lever controls the speed of the engine, as well as the choke when it is pushed all the way forward.
  • Page 17 OPERATION Gasoline The gasoline tank is located under the seat. Do not overfill. WARNING Use extreme care when handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Never fuel machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running. Extinguish cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition.

  • Page 25 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE To Drain The Fuel: Measure the plug gap with a feeler gauge. Correct as necessary by bending side electrode. See Fig. 29. The gap should be set to Locate the fuel filter, which is routed on the left side of the engine between 0.024-0.031 in.
  • Page 26 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE CUTTING DECK REMOVAL To remove the cutting deck, proceed as follows: Place the PTO (Blade Engage) lever in the disengaged (OFF) position and engage the parking brake. Lower the deck by moving the deck lift lever into the bottom notch on the right fender.

  • Page 28 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE ADJUSTMENTS WARNING Never attempt to make any adjustments while the engine is running, except where specified in the operator’s manual. Leveling the Deck NOTE: Check the tractor’s tire pressure before performing any deck leveling adjustments. Refer to Tires, in this Service And Maintenance section for more information regarding tire pressure.
  • Page 29 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE CHANGING THE TRANSMISSION DRIVE BELT NOTE: Several components must be removed and special tools (i.e. air/impact wrench) in order to change the tractor’s drive belt. Contact the nearest Parts & Repair Service Center to have your transmis- sion drive belt serviced.
