12. Install a 1/8" NPT barbed fitting into the 'PRESSURE
TAP' port on the outlet side of the gas valve. Use a
flexible tube to connect it to the low side of a differen-
tial pressure gauge or a slope gauge . This gauge will
measure low (outlet) pressure, which requires a high
degree of resolution.
13. Use a 3/16" hex key to remove the plug above the inlet
of the gas valve. Install a 1/8" MPT barbed fitting into
this port. Use a flexible tube to connect it to the high
side of the high pressure gauge . This gauge will mea-
sure supply (inlet) pressure. Make sure the range of the
gauge is adequate to show at least the 14" W.C. pres-
sure listed as maximum for this heater.
14. Turn on the manual gas shutoff valve.
15. Before operating the heater, leak-test the heater and all
its gas connections with soapy water.
Risk of fire or explosion. Never test for
gas leaks with an open flame.
The heater and its individual shutoff valve must be dis-
connected from the gas supply system during any pres-
sure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of
1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
The heater must be isolated from the gas supply system
by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during
any pressure testing of the gas supply at test pressures
equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
16. Turn on electricity to heater and start the pump.
17. Turn on the heater.
NOTICE: If you are using a slope gauge, close the
shutoff valve of the gauge to avoid pulling the liquid
out of the gauge when the blower starts.
18. After the burner lights, verify that the supply pressure is
within the range 4" to 14" wc. If the supply pressure
drops below this range when the burner ignites, the
gas line capacity may be inadequate, and should be
increased.
19. With the burner still on, disconnect the plastic hose
between the gas valve and "VENT" tap and the blower
mixer inlet. The pressure gauge should then read .2"
±.1" wc. (Since the pressure tap is connected to the
low side of the gauge, the pressure is actually nega-
tive.) If the pressure is outside the range listed, call the
factory at 1-800-752-0183. Do not try to adjust the
pressure yourself.
20. Turn off the heater and replace the plastic tube
between the "VENT" port and the blower mixer inlet.
Remove the pressure tap fittings and replace the plugs
in the "PRESSURE TAP" and inlet side of the combina-
tion gas valve, using a thread sealant approved for use
with natural gas and Propane. Check the fittings for
leaks with soapy water.
21. Replace the top jacket; tighten bolts.
22. Turn on heater. Observe it for smooth ignition and reg-
ular combustion without undue noise or pulsation.
23. Run heater for at least 10 minutes. After at least 10
minutes of continuous operation, insert a combustion
analyzer probe into the exhaust and measure CO
O
. The recommended CO
2
combustion are listed below. Preferably, the readings
should be in the midrange.

24. If the combustion is satisfactory and the exhaust analy-
sis is within the range, complete the conversion by
attaching the conversion plate and label (below).
25. IMPORTANT: Using a permanent fine-tip marker, mark
on the conversion label the date of conversion and the
name and address of the party making the conversion.
Attach the conversion label on the area reserved for it
on the existing appliance label. Using an alcohol
swab, clean the surface before attaching the label. Peel
off the backing strip and apply the label with uniform
pressure over the entire surface. See Figure 5.

Figure 5: Attach Conversion Label As Shown

High Altitude Installation

Above 2,000 feet (610 M) elevation, derate the heater 4%
per 1,000 feet (305 M) of elevation above sea level . For
example, at 3,000 feet (914 M) elevation, derate the heater
12%; at 5,000 feet (1 524 M) elevation, derate the heater
20%.
