flashes if the drive is malfunctioning or needs to be cleaned.
The data transfer indicator (green and amber LED) (3)

only lights up green after you switch on the system unit, then changes to
flashing, and switches off once the self-test has been successfully completed.
Thereafter stays off unless data is being sent to the drive.
–
flashes amber if compressed data is being read from or written to the tape.
–
flashes green if uncompressed data is being read from or written to the tape.
