Appendix B: Maintenance

B-1 Cleaning the sensor window
The design of the STF cameras allows for cleaning of the window covering the
sensor chamber. The camera body is not evacuated and is easy to open. When
opening or reassembling the camera (see
Section 1.3 Installing the
Hardware),
you must be careful not to damage any of the structures contained inside.
Treat the instrument delicately.
For the STF models that use a mechanical shutter, ensure that the power to
the camera is off before cleaning. Carefully rotate the shutter by hand to
access the window for cleaning.
Do not open the sensor chamber itself. If internal chamber maintenance is
required, please return the camera for service.
Opening the sensor chamber
will void your warranty.
The sensor window can be cleaned with a cotton-tipped swab and isopropyl
alcohol. Do not get alcohol on the shutter or other components. Dust on the
window should be blown off if possible. Use alcohol only if necessary. Use one
end of the swab it with alcohol and the other end to dry it. Never re-use a swab
and do not scrub with it – use gentle pressure.
Filters can be cleaned in the same way.
If you have a few small dust specs remaining, don't worry. Sometimes it is
almost impossible to remove them all. Performing a flat field calibration can
remove them effectively.
NOTE:
Cans of compressed air may be used to remove dust, but be cautious. Some
types may leave a residue if used with too much vigor or improper proximity.
Keep the can vertical to avoid expelling the propellant. Follow the
manufacturer's instructions, but also test it on another surface prior to using
it on the camera.
