Cleaning

Dual-Filter-Element Types
1.
Rem ove the w ing nut from
the air cleaner cover, and
rem ove the cover.
2.
Rem ove the w ing nut from
the air filter, and rem ove the
filter.
3.
Rem ove the foam filter from
the paper filter.
4.
Inspect both air filter
elem ents, and replace them if
they are dam aged. Alw ays
replace the paper air filter
elem ent at the scheduled
interval (see page ).

Clean the air filter elem ents if they are to be reused.
Paper air filter elem ent: Tap the filter elem ent several tim es on a
hard surface to rem ove dirt, or blow com pressed air [not
exceeding 207 kPa (2.1 kgf/cm , 30 psi)] through the filter
elem ent from the inside. Never try to brush off dirt; brushing w ill
force dirt into the fibers.
Foam air filter elem ent: Clean in w arm soapy w ater, rinse, and
allow to dry thoroughly. Or clean in nonflam m able solvent and
allow to dry. Dip the filter elem ent in clean engine oil, then
squeeze out all excess oil. The engine will sm oke w hen started if
too m uch oil is left in the foam .

CYCLONE TYPE ONLY: Rem ove the three pan-head screw s from
the precleaner cap, then remove the cyclone housing and air
guide. Wash the parts w ith w ater, dry them thoroughly, and
reassem ble them .
Be sure to install the air guide as show n in the illustration.
Install the cyclone housing so the air intake tab fits into the
groove in the precleaner cap.

Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner case and cover, using
a m oist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from entering the air duct
that leads to the carburetor.
8.
Place the foam air filter elem ent over the paper elem ent, and
reinstall the assem bled air filter. Be sure the gasket is in place
beneath the air filter. Tighten the air filter w ing nut securely.
9.
Install the air cleaner cover, and tighten the w ing nut securely.
Oil-Bath Type
1.
Rem ove the w ing nut, and rem ove the air cleaner cap and cover.
2.
Rem ove the air filter elem ent from the cover. Wash the cover
and filter elem ent in w arm soapy w ater, rinse, and allow to dry
thoroughly. Or clean in nonflammable solvent and allow to dry.
3.
Dip the filter elem ent in clean engine oil, then squeeze out all
excess oil. The engine w ill sm oke if too much oil is left in the
foam .
4.
Empty the used oil from the air cleaner case, w ash out any
accumulated dirt w ith nonflammable solvent, and dry the case.
5.
Fill the air cleaner case to the OIL LEVEL m ark w ith the sam e oil
that is recom m ended for the engine (see page ).
Oil capacity:
60 cm (2.0 US oz , 2.1 Im p oz)
6.
Reassem ble the air cleaner, and tighten the w ing nut securely.
