1 Overview This Andersen Sampler equipped with multi-stage, multi-orifice nozzles is used to measure particle size distribution of airborne aerosol in air and the environment by the impactor method. It is configured with a classifier main unit, flowmeter, pump, and shelter. 1-1 Principle The Andersen Sampler has a structure where usually eight corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy stages are stacked as shown in Fig.

Formula (3) is substituted into formula (2) and each stage's 50 % separated dynamic particle diameter d is obtained by the following formula. μ π Ψ × ρ − × × ··············· (4) However, Q = 28.317 cm /min = 28.3 L/min ρ...

3 Operational Procedures 3-1 Preparation (1) Thoroughly wash collection plates and dry them using a desiccator or something similar. (2) Measure the weight of the collection plates described in (1) and the backup filter. 3-2 Operation (1) Place the backup filter on the backup filter holder of the Andersen Sampler. (2) Place a collection plate on each stage of the sampler.
4 Sample Evaluation Method 4-1 Mass Measurement The mass is calculated from the difference between the mass of the collection plates before sampling and after sampling. For more accurate measurement, a precision balance (minimum scale line of 0.01 mg or less) needs to be used. Measurement in a thermostatic chamber is more desirable when a precision balance is used.
5 Maintenance and Inspections 5-1 Cautions for Use (1) Prevent any hose from being bent along its length or clogged. (2) Secure sufficient ventilation during continuous operation. (3) Dry run the unit (approx. 30 min) every two weeks when you do not plan to use it for a long time.

(3) Remove the four knurled nuts fixing the suction pump. (4) Remove the ground wire (green). (5) Remove the suction pump from the unit. At this point, remove the spacers attached to the threads as well. Be careful not to lose the spacers. Spacer (6) Perform the reverse procedures of the procedures above to install a new pump in the unit.
