10 Sensor Testing

10.1 General

After the sensor has been terminated at both ends it must be tested prior to connection
to the analyser. Testing the sensor will indicate any incorrect terminations or damage
which may have been inflicted on it during installation.
All lengths of sensor dispatched from Geoquip Worldwide are fully tested to ensure
optimum performance when correctly installed.
The sensor must be disconnected from the analyser and
end of line module before taking any measurements.

10.2 Test Procedure

There are two simple tests to be carried out i.e. insulation and continuity.
To carry out the following tests, the installation engineer requires a multi-meter capable
of reading resistance values up to at least 10M Ω.
Insulation between sensor cable cores:
1.
Disconnect the sensor from both the analyser and end-of-line. Ensure the two
wires are not touching each other.
2.
Set the multi-meter to read resistances on the 10MΩ range or greater.
3.
At one end of the sensor cable run, check that the resistance between the two
wires is greater than 1.0M Ω.
4.
If the reading is below 1.0MΩ, the test has failed and further inspection of the
sensor cable run needs to be carried out and the fault rectified.
Continuity test:
1.
At the end-of-line connect the two sensor wires together.
Set the multi-meter to the 500 Ω range.
2.
3.
At the analyser end, check the loop resistance. The loop should be equal to
16 Ω per 100 m of sensor cable e.g. 125 m of cable should have a resistance of
20 Ω.
4.
If all the above tests are satisfactory, the sensor can be connected to the
analyser and the end-of-line re-connected. If a problem is experienced in
obtaining the results described above the fault must be rectified before
continuing. See section 15 Fault Finding.
