The right way to add or remove any add-on card:
Important:
All ATX power supply is powered even when the power is on the OFF position. It
is still providing power to the PCIe Bus.
Make sure power to the wall outlet is unplugged for a whole minute before
working on the system.
Follow the steps below:
The right way to add/remove/re-insert any add-on card:
1) Power down the system
2) Unplug the system power from the wall outlet.
3) Wait 1-2 minutes; depend on how fast your system drains all the power (electrical charges) from
the whole motherboard. If your motherboard has a power LED showing power from the power
supply, make sure it goes off before you go to the next step to add/remove/re-insert any add-on
card.
If the LED is still ON, check any connected peripherals that may inject power into the system. If
yes, unplug them and wait until the LED is OFF.
Without these steps, it can cause a short to the card because PCIe slots are always alive with
power from the ATX power supply.
If your motherboard does not have a power LED, wait a whole minute before going to the next
step.
4) If you are adding a card, it is safe to add now. If you are moving the card to another slot, unplug
the card and wait for 30 seconds before inserting it into a different slot. If you are removing a
card, it is safe to remove it now. If adding or moving an add-on card and the card need to have a
power connector connected, you can do it now.
5) Connect power back and power up the system.
