    Basic Operation OperationButtons ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease asittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments. Whenspeedcontrolis off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation. Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'sHornbuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress. Twohornblastswill indicatethattheenginehasmadethechange. Repeatthe1horn,2bellscodetoreturnit totheothercondition. Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitialneutraluponstart-upif youevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnotequippedwithspeedcontrolto avoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine.

    Maintenance CareoftheRemoteControl YourRailKingRemoteControlSystemshouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There areafewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation: Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries. Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods. Donotdroptheremote. Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside. AnyattemptbyanyoneotherthananauthorizedM.T.H.repairpersontoopenand repairthehandheldtransmitterorlock-onmayresultindamageandthelossof warrantyprotection. LubricatingandGreasing Instructions Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly. Regularlylubricateallaxlesandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollersto DONOT preventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'s OVER OIL maintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneachpivot point. LubricateAxles GreaseGears LubricatePick-UpRollers (DoNotLubetheFlatPartofPick-UpRollers) Thelocomotive'sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactory. Greaseengineevery50 hoursofuseoroneyear.     STEP Oncethemotormountscrewhasbeenremoved,pullthe motorawayfromthetruckblockandlightlycoatthemotor wormgearandbronzedrivegear(inthetruckblock)with grease. Reassemblethetruckandmotor,beingcarefulnottopinch thepickupandgroundwiresbetweenthetruckblockand motormount. Worm Repeattheprocedureifenginehasmorethanonemotor. Gear Reassemblethechassisandbody,beingcarefulthatthe wiresarenotcaughtbetweenthebodyandchassis,as Bronze thiscanleadtoashortthatmaydamagetheelectronics Drive beyondrepair. Gear ! Lubricatetheoutsidetruckblockidlerand STEP drivegearswithgreaseoccasionally. Truck Drive Block Gear Idler CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirt andbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectricalcontactandtraction andprematurelywearouttheneoprenetractiontires. Wheelsand tirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab. Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidandaclean ragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthe track,turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails. BecausethemanufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshould cleantherailsafterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduring initialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal).

    STEP Slipthenewtireontothewheel.Youmayfinditusefulto usetwosmallflatheadscrewdriverstostretchthetireover thewheel. Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,you willneedtoremoveandreinstallthetire. Otherwiseyour enginewillwobblewhileoperating. Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. U s e a razorbladetotrimawayanyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseat itselfinsidethegrooveproperly. Reassemblethetrucksidestothetruckblocks. LocomotiveLightBulbReplacement FollowthecabremovalinstructionsfoundintheGreasing Instructionssectionofthisbooklet(page11). Rotatetheheadlightbulbcounter-clockwisetoremove. YoucanobtainreplacementbulbsdirectlyfromtheM.T.H. PartsDepartment. Replacement CabooseLightBulbReplacement Toreplacetheinteriorlightbulbsfollowtheseinstructionsandseethediagramsbelow.     Self-ChargingBatteryBack-Up ThespecialNiCad7-cell8.4vself-chargingbatteryrechargescontinuouslyduringtrain operationand shouldlastforuptofiveyears. Thebatteryisadrybatterythatshouldnot leakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine. Dependinguponwhenyourenginewas built,itmayneedtobechargedrightoutofthebox. Ifenginesoundsseemdistorted orgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced. Test: Puttheengineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high enoughforthelightstoshinebrightlyandtheenginetomovesteadily)for15 minutes. Recharge: Ifthesoundsareimprovedattheendofthe15-minutetestcharge,the batterychargehasrundownandcanberecharged. Thereareanumberofwaysyou candothis: Leavetheengineinneutralwithtrackvoltageat10-12voltsfor6-7hoursso thebatterycanfullyrecharge(ifyourenginehasasmokeunit,besureitis turnedoff). UseM.T.H.'sbatteryrecharger(soldseparately)thatplugsintoawalloutletand a specialportundertheenginetorechargethebatteryovernightwithoutleaving itonthetrack.
