Compatibility: The LS21 and LS41 for BladeCenter contain licensed system programs that
include set configuration, set features, and test programs. IBM system BIOS is loaded from a
"flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed
to support the standard features of the LS21 and LS41 for BladeCenter and to maintain
compatibility with many current software programs.

operating systems supported with System x™ servers, visit

Contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for
information on the compatibility of hardware and software for System x servers. The Sales
Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these
servers.
Limitations
The two-socket LS21 and LS41 for BladeCenter blades contain eight DIMM sockets. A
maximum of 32 GB of system memory is supported by using 4 GB DIMMs in each of the four
DIMM sockets. A maximum of 64 GB is supported by using 4 GB DIMMs in the 16 DIMM
sockets for the LS41 four socket. All supported system memory is addressable through direct
memory access. The LS21 and LS41 for BladeCenter support available 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB,
and 4 GB DIMMs. Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same server; however, memory
DIMMs of the same capacity must be installed in matched pairs. Refer to the Planning
information section or the System x server Web page memory options.
Microprocessors must be of the same type, wattage, and clock speed on each LS21 and LS41
for BladeCenter. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size or wattages or
upgrading the base processors is not supported.
Due to power and thermal needs, LS21 and LS41 models equipped with 95 W processors will
run n-2 processor speed in a BladeCenter and BladeCenter T chassis. In most cases, this
represents a speed reduction of 400 MHz.
The AMD Opteron LS41 Multiprocessor Expansion Unit is only applicable to the LS41. The
LS21 is not upgradable in this manner.
IBM supports the installation of eight two-socket LS21 or LS41 blades or four four-socket
LS41 blades in the BladeCenter T chassis with the latest management module firmware,
which includes fuel gauge. This feature enables power throttling to occur in the unlikely event
of a power supply failure. The fuel gauge feature reduces power consumption per blade during
a power crisis, keeping all the blades installed in the chassis up and running but at a possibly
lower performance level. Users who are not willing to accept any power or performance
throttling should limit the number of blades they install in a BladeCenter T to seven two-socket
LS21 or LS41 or three four-socket LS41 blades. At this power requirement LS21 or LS41
should not require any throttling in the BladeCenter T environment.
Refer to the Software requirements section for operating system limitations.
Limitations
IBM Director is supported in 32-bit legacy mode only.
ASR is supported in 32-bit legacy mode only.
