Information for inductive and capacitive sensors with transistor output of the
series IAS-10(20)...and KAS-70(80)... of the certification DMT 01 ATEX E157
for hazardous areas
Description:
The capacitive or inductive sensor is for use in areas where is a danger of explosion, caused by combus-
tible dusts. The capacitive sensor (KAS-...2G-1/2D) for instance is used for level control of bulk materials
in silos and containers, appliance group II category 1/2D.
The inductive sensor (IAS-...2G-1/2D) for instance is used as a limit switch, appliance group II category 1/2D.
Futhermore it is designed for use in areas where there is a danger of explosion due to the presence of
inflammable gases, appliance group II category 2G.
The sensor (IAS-...2G-1/2D of KAS-...2G-1/2D) should be installed into the container in such a way, that
only the front part of the casing (active surface) projects into the container and is thus in zone 20. The
other part of the sensor (cable exit, LED's, potentiometer), is outside of the container in zone 21, 22 or
completely outside the hazardous endangered area.
The power supply units generally have to be mounted outside the hazardous endangered areas. The
sensor has an LED visible from outside, which displays the operating state.
For KAS only: The sensitivity adjustment is made by means of a potentiometer accessible from outside.
Function KAS: When the material to be detected in the active area approaches, the sensor will be acti-
vated and its output signal will change.
Function IAS: The sensor reacts to the proximity of the metal objects to be detected in the active area
and changes its output signal.

Sensors with a metal housing have a cable connection with a protective conductor (yellow-green). This is
an internal galvanic connection to the metal housing. The protective wire must be connected.
All cables and plastic parts must be protected against the effects of electrostatic charge.
Please note: The conditions of the EN 60079-26:2007 e. g. relating to dust-coating and temperatures
must be met.
The sensor must not be powered when making the initial connection! Wrong connection
can destroy the sensor!

The sensor has an internal high-speed fuse of 200 mA. It is not possible to replace the
fuse. An external back-up high-speed fuse of 100 mA can be connected for protection of
the sensor.
