Inspection

Remove any transit packing and inspect the unit to en-
sure that all components have been delivered and that
no damage has occurred during transit. If any damage
is evident, it must be noted on the carrier's freight bill
and a claim entered. Any major damage must be re-
ported to your local Johnson Controls representative.
Do not install or energize equipment that
has been damaged. Damaged equipment
may fail during operation resulting in
further equipment damage or personal
injury.
On Frame 2 and larger MV drives, the
power modules must not be installed
by anyone other than the commission-
ing technician when the drive is in its
installed position at the customer's site.
If the power modules are installed before
the drive is in its final destination, the
power modules and internal drive compo-
nents can be damaged, requiring replace-
ment and are not covered by warranty.

General

Before installing the drive, ensure that:
• The drive is the correct voltage and current rating
for the motor being started.
• All of the installation safety precautions are fol-
lowed.
• The correct power source is available.
• The installation site meets all environmental
specifications for NEMA 1.
• The chiller is in proper working condition and
ready to be started.
• Any power factor correction capacitors (PFCCs)
if installed, are located on the power source side
of the drive and not on the motor side.
• The drive is positioned so that the cabinet door(s)
has ample clearance, and all of the controls are
accessible.

Safety precautions

To ensure the safety of the individuals installing the
drive, and the safe operation of the drive, observe the
following guidelines:
• Ensure that the installation site meets all of the
required environmental conditions.
• Lock-out and tag-out all sources of power.
• Follow all NEC (National Electrical Code) and
CSA (Canadian Standards Association) standards.
• Remove any foreign objects from the interior of
the enclosure.
• Ensure that wiring is installed correctly by a qual-
ified electrician.
• Ensure that the individuals installing the drive
have correct personal protective equipment (PPE).

Handling and storage

• Use correct lifting techniques when moving the
VSD. These techniques include correctly sizing
up the load, getting assistance, and using a forklift
when required.
• Store in a well-ventilated covered location and
preferably in the original shipping carton if the
equipment will not be used upon receipt.
• Store in a cool, clean, and dry location. Avoid
storage locations with extreme temperatures -4°F
to 158°F (-20°C to 70°C), rapid temperature
changes, high humidity, moisture, dust, corrosive
gases, or metal particles.
• Do not store the unit in places that are exposed
to outside weather conditions, for example, wind,
rain, or snow.
• Store in an upright position as indicated on the
shipping carton.
Failure to remove power factor correction
or surge capacitors from the load side of
the drive can result in serious damage to
the equipment which is not covered by
the equipment's warranty. The capacitors
must be powered from the line side of the
drive. An auxiliary contact can be used
to energize the capacitors after the motor
has reached full speed.
