OPERATING

4.5.1

OPERATIONAL HINTS

Although the mixer is simple and easy to operate,
there are some basic rules and steps to follow to
achieve top mixing performance. It may be neces-
sary to make some trial loads before the ideal mixture
is achieved.
4.5.2

SET-UP

Hay restrictors must be set (you will have to experi-
ment with various settings until the desired length of
cut is achieved).
4.5.3

LOADING

Note : Always remove twines from bale before putting
into the tub.
4.5.4

BIG BALES

Large square or round bales must be processed
alone before they can be mixed efficiently with other
ingredients.
It is very important that dry forages are coarsely cut
first, than the other ingredients can be added while
the mixer is running.
The long stem forages will continue to be cut as other
materials are added and mixed.
4.5.5

LOADING SEQUENCE

After the long stem forages are coarsely cut, other
ingredients can be added and mixed.
The loading sequence may vary but typical sequence
would be :
1- Haylage
2- Corn silage
3- Small quantity ingredients (minerals, proteins,
etc.)
4- Grains, wet and dry ingredients
5- Water or any other liquid ingredients
As a rule of thumb, when all ingredients are added,
allow a final mix time of 3 to 7 minutes.
You may have to make some tries to find the best
loading sequence for your own situation.

ADJUSTMENTS

When processing material, especialy when the mix-
ture consists of a high percentage of hay, there may
be spillage over the side of the tub. To remedy :
-
Operate at low speed
-
Retract and lock out restrictor plates
-
Reduce load size
If spillage still occurs, the optional rubber side exten-
sions may be needed.
4.5.7

UNLOADING

Avoid stopping the mixing auger when fully
loaded.
It is recommended to unload the mixed
ration immediately after mixing. A fully loaded tub left
sitting for a long period of time will allow the mixed
ration to settle in the tub and on the auger flighting.
It will take more horse power and cause more stress
on the drive mechanism.
4.5.8

CUTTING KNIVES

The quantity and location of knives that come stan-
dard with the mixer are what we think is the best cut-
ting action with a minimum of horsepower require-
ments.
Removing knives will decrease the speed of cutting
action and reduce the horsepower requirements.
Adding extra knives will help break down and cut long
stem faster but will increase horsepower require-
ments.
