CLUTCHES
DRIVE BELT INSTALLATION
1.
Place belt in drive clutch sheaves.
2.
With service bolt installed in driven clutch, work the belt onto the driven clutch. Rotate driven clutch, if necessary,
to aid belt installation. See following WARNING.
WARNING
• Avoid pinching fingers between the belt and clutch while installing belt.
3.
Remove service bolt from driven clutch.
4.
Install the clutch cover and intake hose. See Outer Clutch Cover Installation, Section 18, Page 18-3.
5.
Install the rear shock absorber on the driver side. See Rear Shock Installation, Section 9, Page 9-2.
6.
Connect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Connecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
DRIVE CLUTCH
See General Warning on page 1-2.
CAUTION
• Be very careful with the clutches. A clutch that has been dropped will not be properly balanced. If
either clutch is dropped, assume that it is damaged and replace it.
DRIVE CLUTCH REMOVAL
1.
Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2.
Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield.
3.
Remove the driver side rear shock absorber. See Rear Shock Removal, Section 9, Page 9-1.
4.
Remove the clutch cover intake hose and the clutch cover. See Outer Clutch Cover Removal, Section 18,
Page 18-2.
5.
Remove the drive belt. See Drive Belt Removal, Section 18, Page 18-3.
6.
Remove the drive clutch bolt (Figure 18-7, Page 18-6).
7.
Install the drive clutch puller tool.
8.
Tighten the drive clutch puller tool (Figure 18-8, Page 18-6). As the tool tightens, it will push against the
crankshaft and pull the drive clutch off (Figure 18-9, Page 18-6).
CAUTION
• Hold the clutch assembly firmly when the clutch removal tool is advanced. Once loosened, the clutch
will drop quickly. Do not allow the clutch to fall on a hard surface.
• Do not hit or tap the clutch with a hammer. Do not pry the clutch. These actions will damage the clutch.
