Alpine Fan Tray Installation Note
The Alpine
comes preinstalled from the factory and is not hot-swappable or user-removable. For the Alpine
3808 and the Alpine 3804 switch, you do not need to turn off power to the switch to replace the
fan tray. You can access the fan tray from the front of the Alpine chassis.
This note describes the removal and installation procedures for the Alpine 3808 and the Alpine
3804 switch fan tray.
Caution: Service to Alpine fan trays should be performed by trained service personnel
only. Before installing or removing any components of the system, or before carrying out
any maintenance procedures, you must read the safety information provided in Appendix
A of the Extreme Networks Consolidated Hardware Guide.
Removing an Alpine 3808 or Alpine 3804
Fan Tray
To remove a fan tray from the Alpine 3808 or Alpine 3804 switch:
1 Attach the ESD strap that is provided to your wrist and connect the metal end to the ground
receptacle that is located on the top-right corner of the switch front panel.
2 Unscrew the two captive screws that secure the fan tray to the chassis by turning them
counterclockwise (to the left).
3 Use the finger grips to pull the fan tray out of the chassis approximately 1-inch (2.54-cm), as
shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2; this step disconnects the power and causes the fans to stop
rotating.
4 Allow the fan blades to stop spinning before you remove the fan tray from its slot.
Warning: Keep your hands away from rotating fan blades.
5 Leave the ESD strap permanently connected to the chassis, so that it is always available
when you need to handle ESD-sensitive components.
