Installing M.2 Key-M Socket 3 Devices

Securing an M.2 device to the motherboard requires a few extra steps compared to other
current drive or slot-based connectors. M.2 devices used on this motherboard - Socket 3
(for SSDs) and Socket 1 (for WiFi/Bluetooth) – are installed differently.
Below are images from an installation of an SSD on a Socket 3 Key-M 110mm slot of
the Z590 DARK. This motherboard has three (3) M.2 slots, each covered by a heatsink
to provide additional cooling.
1. Remove the M.2 Cover
Begin by removing the heatsink over the M.2
slots, as shown in the image to the right. The
upper heatsink is secured with five (5) screws,
which remain in place after being loosened.
If you plan to install a 110mm M.2 device,
then you will use the pre-attached screw to
secure your M.2 Device. Skip ahead to the
next step to proceed with removing the screw and installing the M.2 device. If you
remove any of the screws placed at the 110mm interval, you must replace them prior to
replacing the M.2 heatsink.
If you plan to install an 80mm, 60mm, and/or
42mm M.2 device, you will need to install one
of the M.2 screw/standoffs included with the
Z590 DARK accessories for each device. Each
set comes with one standoff, which must be
installed at the interval for your device, and the
screw, which will be used to secure the M.2
device to the standoff.
