General Maintenance
• The biological fi ltration process is nature's way of using bacteria to break down waste and pollutants into harmless by-products
which fertilize aquatic plants in the pond. Adding a successful biological fi lter media to the fi lter provides a place for benefi cial
bacteria to colonize, helping to keep pond water clean and clear. It may take several weeks for the fi lter to "mature" by containing
enough bacteria to keep the pond healthy. The fi lter should be run 24 hours a day in order to maintain its biological function.
• Depending on debris load, the fi lter mat will need to be rinsed periodically. Simply remove the fi lter mat and rinse it in a bucket of
pond water to avoid killing off benefi cial bacteria with the chemicals often found in tap water such as chlorine. The biological fi lter
media (not included) can be cleaned once a year by rinsing in a bucket of pond water. It is not recommended to clean biological fi lter
media more than instructed in order to maintain suffi cient bacteria levels.
• Winter care: If you live in a region where your pond is subject to freezing, it is recommended to shut down and disconnect the pump
running the fi lter, allowing the fi lter to drain to prevent freeze/thaw damage.
Troubleshooting
• Reduced Water Flow
– Make sure to trim off smaller sections of multi-hose adapters to avoid fl ow restriction.
– If left unmaintained, fi lter media could be clogged with debris and may require cleaning.
– Pump or plumbing could be clogged. It may be necessary to clean the pump cage screen and impeller.
• Filter media lifting out of the fi lter during use
– Installations with higher pump fl ow rates or light weight biological fi lter media may experience the fi lter media lifting out of place
while the fi lter is running. If this is the case, place a rock or cobble on top of the fi lter media to keep it in place.
