    Loading documents and paper Loading paper and other print media Note To print on Photo (4"×6") or Photo L (3.5"×5") paper, you must use the photo bypass tray. (See Loading photo paper on page 13.) If the paper support flap is open, close it, and then close the paper support.

Before you clean the inside of the machine, make sure you have unplugged the power cord from the AC power outlet. Doing this will prevent an electrical shock.

    CAUTION Brother strongly recommends that you do not refill the ink cartridges provided with your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement ink cartridges.
  • Page 91 Open the ink cartridge cover. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the LCD shows Cannot Print and Replace Ink BK. Press down the ink release lever and take out the ink cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

    Cleaning the outside of the machine CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the outside surface of the machine. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel.

    Note In addition to cleaning the scanner glass with a non-flammable glass cleaner, run your finger tip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it. If you feel dirt or debris, clean the scanner glass again concentrating on that area.

    Note If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, try installing a new Genuine Brother Brand replacement cartridge for each problem color. Try cleaning the print head again up to five more times. If the print has not improved call Brother Customer Service (see Brother numbers on page i).

    If ink is still missing, call Brother Customer Service. (See Brother numbers on page i.) CAUTION DO NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print head's warranty.

    Checking the ink volume You can check the ink that is left in the cartridge. Press Ink. Press a or b to choose Ink Volume. Press OK. The LCD shows the ink volume. Press Stop/Exit. Note You can check the ink volume from your computer.

If you are not able to find the green protective part, DO NOT remove the ink cartridges before shipping. It is essential that the machine be shipped with either the green protective part or the ink cartridges in position.
